Singapore, 13 April 2007 - Two outstanding women from China
will speak at the upcoming Lianhe Zaobao Culture Forum from May 26 to 27 at the
Suntec Singapore Ballroom on Level 2.
Ms Hung Huang and Ms Mao Jian
both grew up in a politically turbulent era. The former is known to be outspoken
and uninhibited and the latter gentle and exquisite. Hung Huang, who is from
Beijing and Mao Jian from Shanghai are household names and cultural icons in
China, attracting a legion of fans and readers in the global Chinese-language
print and new media scene.
They will be speaking at the Lianhe Zaobao
Culture Forum titled "A Rising China, An Emerging Generation", organised in
conjunction with the World Book Fair 2007. The forum consists of two sessions, a
Mandarin session on May 26 (Saturday) at 2pm and an English session on May 27
(Sunday) at 3pm. Ms Hung will speak at both sessions in Mandarin and English.
Lianhe Zaobao has previously organised several key Chinese forums
featuring eminent speakers from China and Taiwan.

The facilitators for the forum is Ms
Wang Yan Qing for the Mandarin session and Diana Ser for the English
session.

Tickets to the forum cost $25 for one session and $40
for two sessions including refreshments.

Biodata
Hung Huang
Known for her outspoken and
straight-talking style, Ms Hung is seen by many as a "rebel from an eminent
family".
Born in Beijing, She is the CEO of China Interactive Media
Group which publishes popular magazines such as iLook, Seventeen and Time Out
(China version).
Last year, she was named one of the "10 Most Glamorous
Women in China" in an event jointly organised by several Chinese media
outfits.
According to website Sina.com, her blog is now the third most
popular in China.
Described as a "rebel" for her strong views and
no-holds-barred way, she is not averse to spewing vulgarities and defying
traditions.
When one talks about contemporary Chinese women and culture,
Ms Hung is no doubt an iconic figure.
Her grandfather Zhang Shizhao was a
renowned scholar in the 1930s and her mother Zhang Hanzhi was an outstanding
diplomat who once served as Mao Zedong’s English interpreter.
At the age
of 12, she left to study in the United States and later graduated with a
political science degree from Vassar College, a top liberal arts colleges in New
York.
She became the chief China representative of a German metal firm
even before she hit 30.
In 1991, she quit a well-paying job and returned
to China in search of opportunities.
She contributes regularly to
magazines and newspapers and many of her essays can be found in an autobiography
"My Abnormal Life" published in 2004. Hung Huang is also a regular face on TV,
where she has hosted several programmes.
Last year, she starred in a
movie titled "Perpetual Motion" which also featured her mother.
Mao Jian
Ms Mao is a popular writer who is currently
teaching at the East China Normal University.
Her essays on Western
literature, movie commentaries and columns can be found in major newspapers and
magazines in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, such as the Hong
Kong Economic Journal, Wen Wei Po, Lianhe Zaobao, Yazhou Zhoukan, Shanghai
Literature, Shucheng and Wanxiang.
Born in Ningbo, Zhejiang province,
her publications include Extreme Crime, Extreme Beauty - A Movie Diary, When The
World
Turns Right and Smile Slowly.

fans all over the world, Mao Jian is known for her uncanny ability to capture
and portray the emotions, feelings and lives of modern Chinese in a witty,
humourous and sometimes mischievous way that often surprises readers.
