The Journalist
Being a journalist is no ordinary job. It means long hours when you are on the trail sniffing out a scoop. It means doors slammed in your face when newsmakers refuse to talk. It means writer's block when your mind refuses to conjure up the words that can tell your story.

But it also means that you get to meet people from Presidents to pig farmers. You become witness to events that move people or transform the course of history. It is a job that makes you humble as the frailties and strengths of human nature are brought home to you. Yet, it makes you proud to know that you have a key role, recording what people want or need to know.

Like the rest of the world, journalism is changing too. The typewriter is dead. Singapore Press Holdings takes pride in its paperless newsrooms where computers have taken over the laborious task of typing, page layout and even footage editing.

Even as the role evolves, the mission of the journalist remains unchanged: To give accurate and balanced reports of issues close to people's hearts. Take up the challenge and the rewards, both intangible and tangible, are immense.

SPH offers attractive remuneration as we understand the demands of journalism and the central role that journalists play in the life of any society.

The Company
SPH creates content, and distributes it. In print, we have 14 newspapers in the four official languages and 90 magazine titles. What we write reaches 2.78 million people, or nine in 10 of those aged 15 and above. Online, we have the six main SPH dailies, available on AsiaOne.com. What we put on the Internet nets 300 million pageviews a month.

And there is space for you.

Join The Ride
We are writing a new chapter for journalism, by moving beyond print and into the Internet. We are inviting you to help us write this, by applying early for the SPH scholarship for a career in journalism. Shortlisted candidates will be given a taste of journalism in an internship scheme, a unique feature of the SPH scholarship selection process.

You should be under 22 years old with an outstanding academic profile, strong language skills and impressive co-curricular activities record. Based on your own merits, you may seek admission to a recognised university of your choice, whether local or foreign, and choose any course of study, subject to consideration. Existing university and polytechnic undergraduates can also apply.

SPH scholars are required to complete the full course of study for a first degree, including an Honours degree where applicable, within four years. If you wish to extend the scholarship deal to include a Master's degree and are confident that you can complete the entire course, including the Master's degree, within four years, you have our support.

The scholarship pays for all your tuition fees and compulsory expenses and you will receive a maintenance allowance. If you are pursuing your degree in a foreign university, the scholarship also covers baggage, clothing, settling-in and book allowances as well as return air tickets. You will be bonded to SPH for four years upon completion of your course in a local university or six years when you return from an overseas university.
