SPH promotes a culture of charitable giving and contributes
generously to deserving charities each year. The Group is
an active member of the SHARE programme under the Community
Chest and matches dollar-for-dollar its staff contribution
to SHARE.
The Group's flagship English newspaper, The Straits Times,
launched the highly successful The Straits Times School Pocket
Money Fund. Started in 2000, more than S$2.5 million was raised
in 2001 to help some 6,000 children from low-income families.
The amount raised crossed the S$3 million mark in 2002 to
help 7,200 needy children.
SPH is also a strong supporter of the President's Challenge,
raising close to S$600,000 for the community fund in 2002
with events organised by its Chinese Newspapers Division and
The New Paper.
The two events organised by the SPH Chinese Newspapers Division
- Horse Sculpture Charity Auction and National Treasure Hunt
raised S$117,200 and S$333,798 respectively. Proceeds of S$56,000
from The New Paper Big Walk 2002 went to the President's Challenge.
The New Paper also organised the Be Yourself Day when students
attended school in attires of their choice to express creativity
and raise funds for charity. This event raised S$88,450 for
the President's Challenge 2002.
In 2000, SPH started the Adopt-A-Charity programme to encourage
staff to visit the less fortunate regularly to bring cheer
to them. Some of the charities adopted by SPH staff include
the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped, MINDS
Tampines Home, Bright Hill Evergreen Home and the Asian Women's
Welfare Association Special School.
