Lianhe Wanbao launches "Memory in Prints: Lee Kuan Yew and Us" exhibition

Commemorative booklet on founding Prime Minister will also be launched

Singapore, 29 July 2015 --- Lianhe Wanbao, the Chinese evening daily published by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), will unveil a pictorial exhibition featuring photos of the seven-day state funeral of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on 1 August 2015

The travelling exhibition, titled "Memory in Prints: Lee Kuan Yew and Us", will run from 1 August to 7 SeptemberIt will be opened by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Finance, on 1 August at Big Box in Jurong.

Presented in the four official languages, the exhibition will showcase photographs taken by both SPH and freelance photographers during the period of the state funeral. These photographs captured the different ways in which the entire nation bade its final farewell to Mr Lee Kuan Yew earlier this year.

Former news photographers and journalists such as Bob Lee, Chua Chin Hon and Ray Chua werealso invited to submit their works for the exhibition.

Apart from photos, the exhibition will feature a rare display of Mr Lee's "foot-print", made possible by the kind donation of a mold of Mr Lee's feet by his shoemaker Mr Lee Kean Siong who made shoes for the founding Prime Minister.

The exhibition will also feature a gallery displaying Lee Kuan Yew-themed works created by local artists including Lee Kow Fong, Edmund Chen, Lee Xin Li, Lawrence Koh and Ong Yi Teck. One of these works is Ong Yi Teck’s portrait of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, created by writing Mr Lee's name 18,000 times.

Launch of commemorative booklet
In conjunction with the exhibition, Lianhe Wanbao will also launch a memorial booklet that charts the myriad emotions experienced by Singaporeans during the state funeral.

Titled "Those Seven Days: Lee Kuan Yew and Us", it includes a portion of the exhibition’s content and the front-page news reports of the passing of Lee Kuan Yew which were published in SPH newspapers, as well as page layouts of Lianhe Wanbao's coverage of the state funeral.

The booklet also contains "behind the scenes" images of how the reporters and photographers covered the passing of Mr Lee. It includes exclusive photos which were taken by the reporters themselves while covering the event.

Sharing Sessions
In addition, Lianhe Wanbao will organise five sharing sessions for journalists and photographers to share their unforgettable reporting experiences of the state funeral with the public. Local artists are also invited to share their thoughts about creating works related to the founding Prime Minister as well as their personal interaction with him.

Tribute Wall
Amongst the thousands of written tributes at the Istana, the Parliament House and various community tribute sites during the mourning period, Lianhe Wanbao has specially picked 30 quotes which express the touching relationships between Singaporeans and Mr Lee.

These quotes will be displayed in the gallery called "Encounter: Brief Interactions, Eternal Memories" at the exhibition. Singaporeans of all ages described their encounters with Mr Lee. One saw him when he was a baby in 1923, one was patted on the head by him and he addressed her as "little girl" while others waved to him behind car windows.

Ms Lee Huay Leng, Editor of Lianhe Wanbao, said: "The period of mourning was special to us and it has gone down in our history as a significant milestone. The number of people who turned up to pay their last respect and the scale of the state funeral were unprecedented. We have put together an exhibition of photographs which captured the emotions of the people during this period. This is not just an exhibition on the late Mr Lee, it is an exhibition about Singaporeans and it documented an important milestone in Singapore's history. This is why we are bringing the exhibition to various parts of Singapore."
