Official Guinness World Record:
TNP Big Walk 2000 is World's Biggest Walking Event
August 21, 2000 - The New Paper Big Walk 2000 has been made
an official Guinness World Record as the World's Biggest Walking
Event. Held on 21 May 2000 at the National Stadium, a record 77,500
participants joined in to mark the 10th anniversary of The New Paper
Big Walk ("TNP Big Walk").
Jointly organised by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), Singapore
Sports Council, Singapore Amateur Athletic Association (SAAA) and
supported by the National Healthy Lifestyle Committee, the TNP Big
Walk has become a colourful once-a-year event where people of all
ages and from different walks of life come together to enjoy a weekend
of carnival fun and attractive prizes.
"The number of participants is increasing every year, and
with this Guinness world record under our belt, we have to do something
even more special next year," said Mr Tham Khai Wor, SPH Executive
Vice President for Marketing.
"The massive logistical task involved in organising TNP Big
Walk really pays off when you see all the families, friends, colleagues
and youngsters having a great time while celebrating healthy living,"
Mr Tham added.
TNP Big Walk is a non-profit event and proceeds go towards promoting
sports in Singapore via SAAA. The event is supported by a host of
sponsors.
