The New Paper donates $144,450 to President's Challenge
SINGAPORE, September 14, 2002 - The New Paper, an afternoon
tabloid published by the Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH),
will donate a total of $144,450 to the President's Challenge as
part of its contribution to charity.
The donation comes from $88,450 raised from The New Paper Be Yourself
Day, which was part of the just ended week-long President's Challenge,
and $56,000 from the annual New Paper Big Walk held in May this
year.
Twenty-five primary and secondary schools took part in the TNP
Be Yourself Day on August 30, when for a donation, they were allowed
to come to school - dressed to express themselves. This annual event,
launched last year, is part of The New Paper Project Y, which features
the role and contribution of schools to raise funds creatively.
Mr Ivan Fernandez, editor of The New Paper, said: "Uniformity
serves some purposes but this Day is all about tossing aside school
uniforms and expressing one's creativity and individuality. It ties
in well with The New Paper's philosophy of being different. Our
thanks to all the schools who helped make it a success this year.''
The New Paper Big Walk is an annual mass fitness event which started
12 years ago. This year's 10-km walk attracted 68,950 people.
The daily circulation of The New Paper is over 117,000 and its
Sunday circulation is about 147,000.
This year's President's Challenge has raised $5.8 million so far,
exceeding the target of $5 million for 40 charities. The annual
charity drive featured a series of community-based activities.
