Veteran journalist named acting editor of Streats
Singapore, December 17, 2002 - Singapore Press Holdings
Limited (SPH) today announced the appointment of veteran journalist
Paul Jansen of The Straits Times as acting editor of Streats from
today.
He takes over from Ken Jalleh Junior, who is being redeployed within
SPH.
Mr Jansen, 49, has held various positions at The Straits Times
in his 26-year career, including stints as money editor and picture
editor, and founding editor of The Straits Times Interactive, besides
being a writer and editor on the local news desk and foreign desk.
His appointment was announced to staff today by Alan John, night
editor of The Straits Times and supervising editor of Streats.
"Paul brings with him considerable skills and wide experience
as a senior journalist and team leader and I have full confidence
that he will build on the changes we have made recently to improve
Streats," he said.
Streats underwent a revamp on November 18 to meet demands for more
business coverage, focus more on people in its story-telling, and
to brighten its presentation and layout.
The paper's print run was increased to 280,000 copies a day with
160,000 copies distributed to landed homes and condominiums, offices
in CBD, business and technology parks, and government public service
centres, where previously the paper was distributed mainly at MRT
stations and bus interchanges.
Mr Jansen is the second senior journalist from SPH's English and
Malay Newspaper Division to join Streats in recent weeks.
Veteran journalist Conrad Raj moved from The Business Times to
be Streats' business editor a month ago and leads the paper's beefed-up
coverage of business and finance.
Mr John said that any future changes would be made for the same
reasons that Mr Raj and Mr Jansen moved to Streats: to strengthen
the editorial team and improve the product.
The new editor, Mr Jansen, said: "Readers and advertisers
have responded well to the improvements to date. But every change
raises expectations further.
"I'm looking forward to working with the team to put out a
paper that will continually exceed those expectations."
