Birdpark Celebrate Singapore's 39th Birthday with an All Star Tribute
to the Nation

Singapore, August 4, Wednesday - Even the feathered stars at
the Jurong BirdPark are in a party mood and gearing up for some fun
and action to celebrate Singapore's 39th birthday.
As a National Day tribute to the nation, the Jurong BirdPark will
be presenting an exclusive All Star BirdShow on Sunday, 8 August 2004,
jointly with Singapore Press Holdings, the adopter of the birdshow.
The show will feature a sea of red and white birds (reflecting colours
of our National flag) and include special appearances by favourite
stars such as macaws and cockatoos. The lovable Big John - a cockatoo,
which has tickled droves of BirdPark visitors for over three decades
will be raising the Singapore flag.
The highlight of the show includes honouring the feathered stars for
their respective contributions over the years. Winner of Excellence
in the Arts, Pikasso will be show-casing a painting in red and white
while Excellence in Education award winner Ippy will demonstrate its
wit over an IQ test. Watch Excellence in Sports winners, Sunny and
Cocky challenge each other's slam-dunking skills in a one-on-one basketball
match. And hold your breath as Excellence in Technology and Science
award winner, Major Stanley rocket into space in his latest space
shuttle!
Said Dr Wong Hon Mun, Executive Director of Jurong BirdPark: "There
are 9,000 birds from 600 species at the BirdPark. According to the
Singapore Bird Census 2004, there are now 6,772 birds from 145 species
in the wild. These form an important part of our ecosystem. As we
celebrate Singapore's birthday with this special show, we hope to
take the opportunity not only to entertain but also to educate visitors
that they too can play a part in conserving the homes of the many
birds around us."
Added Mrs Sng Ngoi May, Executive Vice President of SPH's Corporate
Services and Corporate Relations: "This special bird show to
commemorate the nation's 39th birthday also serves as a timely reminder
for the community to protect the environment. SPH strongly support
efforts at all levels to educate our younger generation on how to
appreciate wildlife and conserve them for generations after them.
We are committed to working closely with Jurong BirdPark to help spread
this conservation message on this special day."
Launched in 1982, the All Star BirdShow is a hallmark offering of
the Jurong BirdPark and a world-famous bird show featuring the finest
of the bird kingdom. Boasting a wide variety of performing birds,
from cockatoos, macaws, flamingos and pelicans to hornbills, the All
Star BirdShow serves to educate its audience about wildlife and environmental
conservation. Every show ends with a conservation message, encouraging
the audience to play an active role in conservation.
What's more, there's also a special appearance by the Bird mascot
at the Foyer (10am & 12noon) and a Kid's Colouring Contest at
the Songbird Terrace (2.30pm).
Visitors who present cut-out coupons from press ads in The Straits
