Unveiling...
the classy new look of The Straits Times

SINGAPORE, 15 September 2004 - The Straits Times is about
to get better. From 19 October 2004, your newspaper is going to come
to you packed with more. News. Features. Specials.
And a redesign that promises a fresh new look.
Advertisers and the media will be given a sneak preview of the
redesigned Straits Times at a trade launch at 7 pm today (15 September),
at The Grand Ballroom, The Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore.
Straits Times Editor Han Fook Kwang said the ST relaunch "is
special because we're breaking new ground".
"We're going big on lifestyle with three new magazines in
three big lifestyle areas. We're going to give you even more value
for money, more Sports pages, more foreign correspondents, more
feature pages, better Home and Money coverage," he added.
"In short, more of the quality journalism that has won The
Straits Times so many awards."

the continent will help you understand better the countries and
changing societies they cover.
They will deliver the news, as well as insights that take you close
up to developments that matter not only our neighbours in the region
and beyond, but to all of us in Singapore too.
They will keep you up-to-date on people shaping the future, the
men and women making a difference in all fields.

is a national icon that has grown, changed and thrived with this
nation.
So count on us to cover the Singapore beat comprehensively and
with new vigour.
We're stepping up our output of news and views on Singapore politics,
expanding the Insight pages to run twice a week.

sports and every other facet of life as we keep you informed and

and at play.
We want you to know Singapore better too, so expect new features
on places and people, and not just familiar sights and faces.
MORE
NEWS FEATURES
Look out for our new section called Review, every day, Monday to
Saturday, for commentaries, features and news analyses by staff
writers and an ever-widening pool of contributors on the hot issues
of the day. Also on the menu: Interviews with people behind the
news, and stories to take you up close to Singapore's varied communities.
MORE SPORTS PAGES
Sports fans can look forward to a strengthened Sports section,
with more pages, and a more varied menu. You'll get soccer, of course,
and updates on all the English Premiership League thrills. But look
out too for coverage of more sports, personalities and rising stars
from both the international and Singapore arenas.
MORE TO LIFE! TOO
The Life! section gets a make-over too. All your lifestyle and
entertainment favourites will still be there - Arts, Movies, TV,
Music Travel, Food, Fashion, Books, Motoring, Interiors and Design.
Look out for People every Monday for the buzz on celebrities from
East Asia, Hollywood and Bollywood.
And on Wednesdays, our Mid-Life! section-within-a-section will
celebrate life after 50 and families.
We did say there'll be more in The Straits Times from 19 October
2004. More value for everyone.

About The Straits Times
The Straits Times, the English flagship daily of SPH, has been serving
readers for more than a century. Launched on 15 July 1845, its comprehensive
coverage of happenings in Singapore, the region and beyond, makes
it the most-read newspaper in Singapore. It has a daily circulation
of 390,000 and readership of about 1.3 million.
The Straits Times' key strength is in its world class coverage
of news outside Singapore. With 10 bureaus in major cities around
the world, The Straits Times correspondents bring world news to
readers on a Singapore platter, helping them appreciate world events
from a Singaporean perspective.
An active member of the community, The Straits Times was named
"Newspaper of the Year" by the Pacific Area Newspaper
Publishers' Association (PANPA) in 2002 for its ability to connect
with its local community through its Straits Times School Pocket
Money Fund programme, which raises funds for children from low-income
families, and its extensive foreign news coverage and analysis.
The Straits Times also carries a weekly education section to promote
newspaper reading among Singapore students and this initiative won
the SPH's Circulation Department the PANPA Newspaper Marketing Award
for Circulation in 2004.
