SINGAPORE, 29 December 2004 - Singapore Press Holdings today launched a public appeal for funds and relief supplies to help the victims of the devastating tsunami that struck South Asia and South-east Asia last Sunday.

To spearhead the relief operations, SPH announced that it is donating $200,000 to the Singapore Red Cross Society towards relief efforts.

Its 3,000-over staff are also pitching in with personal contributions.

SPH will also open its headquarters at News Centre, 1000 Toa Payoh North, as a collection point from tomorrow (30 December 2004) to next Friday (7 January 2005) for the public to donate funds and relief supplies. The collection time is from 9 am to 6 pm daily.

SPH will collect cash and cheque donation on behalf of the Singapore Red Cross Society.

SPH is also appealing for donation of the following items:

• Canned and packaged food
• Over-the-counter drugs, wound dressing and vitamins
• Clothings
• Blankets and sheets

Said Mr Alan Chan, CEO of SPH: "We are all shocked by the magnitude of the devastation caused by the tsunami in the affected neighbouring countries, and deeply saddened by the loss of so many lives. Thousands more have been made homeless and they need help urgently. Our deepest sympathies go to the families of the victims.

"We want to do our bit to help rally the Singapore community to support international relief operations in bringing supplies as quickly as possible to the victims of this colossal tragedy."

SPH will distribute all funds and relief items donated by the public to the Singapore Red Cross and various organisations involved in international relief efforts.
