Dr Tony Tan to join SPH Board
of Directors
SINGAPORE, 31 August 2005 - Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, who steps
down from Cabinet tomorrow, has accepted an invitation to join the
Singapore Press Holdings' Board of Directors when the necessary
regulatory approvals have been obtained.
On Dr Tan's decision to accept his invitation to join the SPH Board,
SPH Chairman Lim Chin Beng said: "We are delighted to have
someone of Dr Tan's distinction, experience and stature on our Board.
With his long and distinguished service to the government and the
nation, extensive business experience and insights into the industry,
Dr Tan brings with him a wealth of expertise which will greatly
benefit the company. We look forward to working with Dr Tan."
Dr Tan, an MP for Sembawang GRC, has helmed the finance, trade
and industry, education, and defence ministries, and was Singapore's
Deputy Prime Minister and security supremo before he stepped down
from the Cabinet.
In education, he oversaw the university sector for more than 25
years, and guided the transformation of National University of Singapore
and the Nanyang Technological University into institutions of international
standing, and was the driving force behind the setting up of Singapore
Management University, the third university here.
Dr Tan will continue to be actively involved in the research field
after his retirement. He will chair the National Research Foundation
and be the deputy chairman of the Research, Innovation and Enterprise
Council, as well as chair the Education Ministry's International
Academic Advisory Panel.
