SPH Targets Younger Readers and Net Savvy Singaporeans
Offers news on the go to StarHub's i-mode subscribers for as little
as $3 a month
SINGAPORE, 14 OCT 2005 Singapore's leading media
group, Singapore Press Holdings, today unveiled a tie-up with StarHub
as a preferred content provider for its new mobile internet service,
i-mode.
From November, i-mode users will be able to subscribe to the online
versions of SPH's flagship publications like The Straits Times and
The Business Times on their i-mode enabled mobile phones.
They can also sign-up to read a selection of stories taken from
the Chinese dailies, Lianhe Zaobao, Lianhe Wanbao and Shin Min Daily
News.
To keep those constantly on the move up to date, SPH is also offering
StarHub's i-mode users the option of subscribing to an innovative
"Breaking News" service, which delivers updates throughout
the day, constantly keeping users in touch with the latest local
and world news.
Choice stories from The Straits Times weekly magazines Digital
Life, Urban and Mind Your Body will be available under the SPH Lifestyle
section.
The Straits Times, The Business Times, SPH Lifestyle and Chinese
News subscription services will be offered to i-mode users at only
$3 monthly each, while the Breaking News service will cost $5 a
month.
"i-mode enables us to cross beyond print and the Internet
onto the mobile platform. As a dynamic and progressive media company,
we constantly seek new channels to meet the needs of our readers,
and i-mode will be an ideal service for those who welcome access
to news on the move, in addition to the newspapers they read daily,"
said Mr James Heng, the Executive Vice-President of Product Development
& Branding and New Media at SPH.
SPH also believes i-mode will be one way of reaching out to a younger
generation of Singaporeans.
By offering our news and information on i-mode, SPH will
not only stay relevant to our existing readers but also strengthen
our reach amongst the young working adults, a very mobile savvy
group with a big interest in new technology," Mr Heng said.
Besides accessing news and lifestyle information from SPH dailies
and weeklies, i-mode users can send and receive email, check the
weather forecast, get sports results, load ringing tones onto their
handsets, play games, do online banking, online stock trading, purchase
tickets, download images and music, and search for restaurants or
new friends.
i-mode was pioneered in 1999 by Japan's NTT DoCoMo, and currently
has more than 45 million users in Japan and over five million in
Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Taiwan, Greece,
Israel, Russia, and the Netherlands.
The exact launch date for the service here has not been finalised.
With some 1,000 journalists and 16 overseas bureaus in major cities
around Asia and the world, SPH provides unparalleled coverage of
local, regional and global news in print and online.
