Soak
in the old-world charm of Geylang Serai
as the SSO performs familiar classics and Malay tunes
Singapore, 7 August 2006 - The Geylang Serai neighbourhood
will be filled with the melodious strains of well-known Malay tunes
- Getaran Jiwa and Bunyi Gitar by renowned Malaysian composer and
film director P. Ramlee - and other popular classics on August 12.
Performed by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Lim
Yau, the SSO @ Geylang Serai concert is part of the second season
of the SPH Gift of Music series. This concert is also our gift to
the nation as it celebrates 41 years of nation building.
Apart from P. Ramlees compositions, the evenings repertoire
also comprises a delightful mix of classical favourites and pop
music, including a stirring medley of Beatles songs.
Says Executive Vice-President, Ms Ginney Lim of SPHs Legal
and Corporate Relations, The SPH Classical Experience featuring
the SSO is returning to the heartland for the third time. This follows
after successful performances at Seng Kang and Toa Payoh Central.
In all our heartland concerts, we try to bring a fresh perspective
to classical music by tailoring the lineup according to the flavours
of the neighbourhood.
In this instance, the SSO has introduced some traditional
Malay songs inspired by the old kampong days at Geylang Serai.
Hopefully, this will cultivate keener interest and appreciation
for classical music especially with the young. adds Ms Lim.
The next SPH Classical Experience concert by the SSO will be held
at Tampines in October this year.
Details of the concert are given below.
