Chief China correspondent Ching Cheong
Singapore, 8 September 2006 - Lawyers for Straits Times
journalist Ching Cheong have filed an appeal against the conviction
and sentence
handed down by a Beijing court on charges of spying, as provided
for under Chinese law.
Ching Cheong has maintained his innocence in his appeal.
SPH is continuing to provide Mr Ching and his family with legal
and financial support, and appeals to the Chinese authorities to
consider his application for the conviction and sentence to be reviewed
with leniency and compassion, given his professional standing and
record.
