Lianhe Zaobao turns 100 in 2023

Singapore, 11 December 2022 - Lianhe Zaobao (ZB), the flagship Chinese-language daily of SPH Media, will turn 100 on 6 September 2023. To mark this milestone, ZB is celebrating its centennial year with a series of events and activities until September 2023.

Kicking off the centennial celebrations was a Mass Read Along event held today at Heartbeat@Bedok. Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies, Mr Heng Swee Keat, graced the event together with Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information, Mr Tan Kiat How. They participated in a discussion on current news topics with Ms Lee Huay Leng, Editor-in-Chief of SPH Media’s Chinese Media Group.

ZB will be organising several activities to engage and thank the many generations of its readers whom it has forged very strong ties with over the hundred years. These commemorative events, which will be held in 2023, include the following:

  • A photo exhibition featuring the works of ZB’s photojournalists
  • A comics exhibition showcasing the works of ZB’s comics artists
  • A Chinese orchestra concert
  • An outdoor carnival cum concert

The daily will also organise special events to connect with both new and existing audiences. For the first time, ZB will host a community eSports tournament and a large-scale cycling event for audiences from multi-generational groups.

In addition, ZB has launched "Zaobao Club", a readers’ rewards programme which offers exclusive members’ benefits as well as customised reading experiences based on their preferences. ZB’s subscribers will be given VIP status in the club and will receive priority invitations to ZB’s events, including exclusive “subscriber-only” programmes. Non-subscribers who register as a member of the club will get to read curated content on ZB’s website and news app, as well as sign up for ZB’s events and participate in monthly giveaways and lucky draws.

Another highlight of the centennial celebrations is the oral history project, which is a collaboration between ZB and the National Archives of Singapore. This project documents the long history of local Chinese newspapers through the oral history accounts of over 30 former and present editorial staff of ZB. These interviews will be curated and published by ZB next year on a website and in a book.

Mr Goh Sin Teck, Editor of Lianhe Zaobao, said: “Throughout ZB’s 100-year history, our colleagues have continued to stay true to our mission, which is to provide quality journalism to our readers. We will continue to uphold this journalistic principle that has guided us all these years. We could not have achieved this important milestone without the support of our readers, subscribers, newsmakers, advertisers and partners, and we look forward to their continued support in more years to come.”
