Eight teachers honoured for their exemplary efforts in teaching the Chinese language
Singapore, 24 September 2022 - Eight Chinese language teachers were presented with the Distinguished Chinese Language Teachers Award during a presentation ceremony held on 24 September 2022 at the News Centre Auditorium.
The annual Award, in its 25th edition this year, recognises deserving Chinese language teachers who have shown exemplary efforts towards the teaching of the Chinese language and culture. The Award also acknowledges teachers who have been cultivating students’ interests in the Chinese language and culture through creative teaching methods and in-class or online activities.
This year’s winners (see Annex for the list of recipients) were nominated by parents, colleagues and students based on their teaching pedagogies, classroom management and care for students. They were assessed based on a lesson demonstration video and an interview with the panel of judges.
A total of 1428 nominations, consisting of 474 teachers from 155 schools, were received this year. All Chinese language teachers (except past winners) from primary and secondary schools, pre-university and junior colleges were eligible to be nominated for the Award.
The eight winners received the award from Ms Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State for Education and Manpower at the award ceremony. They each received a cash prize of $1500 and a trophy.
Ms Tan Leng Tuan, Editor, Young Audience, SPH Media’s Chinese Media Group, said: “The Chinese Media Group of SPH Media has been organising the Distinguished Chinese Language Teachers Awards for 25 consecutive years. It is our way of showing appreciation to Chinese teachers who have shown diligence and unwavering spirit in teaching the Chinese language despite the challenging landscape they faced. Chinese teaching and learning is an uphill task but we are happy and proud to see these Chinese teachers overcome these challenges with their ingenuity and passion.”
The judging panel of the Award consists of representatives from the Ministry of Education (MOE), Singapore Centre for Chinese Language, The Society of Chinese Education Singapore, Singapore Chinese Teachers’ Union and Singapore Middle School Chinese Teachers’ Association.
The Award is organised by Lianhe Zaobao and ZBSchools, and co-organised by Singapore Centre for Chinese Language, The Society of Chinese Education Singapore, Singapore Chinese Teachers’ Union and Singapore Middle School Chinese Teachers’ Association. It is sponsored by SPH Foundation, with support from the MOE.
