Her World’s Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever of the Year push the boundaries of education

Singapore, 3 October 2022 - Since their inauguration, Her World’s Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever of the Year awards have recognised women whose stellar achievements made them exceptional figures of strength, leadership and inspiration, locally and abroad.

This year, Her World was honoured to celebrate the accomplishments of Mrs Ng Gim Choo, Her World’s Woman of the Year, and Ms Amanda Chong, Her World’s Young Woman Achiever of the Year, both of whom have made great strides in championing early childhood education and literacy in Singapore.

After two years of subdued celebrations due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s awards ceremony was marked by a gala dinner held at Raffles Hotel. The evening’s Guest-of-Honour was President Halimah Yacob.

Following months of public nominations and a rigorous selection process, Her World’s Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever of the Year were finally decided upon by a judging panel of eight, chaired by Ms Jennie Chua, and comprising Ms Joanna Lee-Miller, Publishing Director at SPH Media; Ms Khor Siew Kim, Secretariat-Legal at SPH Media; Mr Ken Lim, Executive Director of Hype Records; Dr Alex Lin, Chief Technology Officer of Legend Logistics Group; Ms Pat Law, Founder of GOODSTUPH; Ms Olivia Lee, Winner of Her World Young Woman Achiever 2018; and Ms Annabelle Kwok, Winner of Her World Young Woman Achiever 2019.

Ms Elizabeth Lee, Editor-in-Chief of Her World, said: "At Her World, we make it our mission to celebrate and advocate for Singapore women. Our Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever winners are both remarkable individuals who have not only found success in their respective careers, but have also made significant contributions to their communities. They are inspirational trailblazers who, coincidentally, have pushed for greater access to education in their own way: Gim Choo by starting EtonHouse and introducing inquiry-based learning, and Amanda, through her writing, which is now widely studied by the next generation, and the co-founding of a literacy non-profit.”

On receiving Her World’s Woman of the Year Award, Mrs Ng Gim Choo, Founder, Chairwoman and Group MD of the EtonHouse International Education Group, said: “We wear different hats - that of a professional, wife, daughter, daughter-in-law, and many more - and face many challenges. We have resilience and grit, and the emotional intelligence to hold our families together and build our careers at the same time. I accept this award on behalf of all women who work hard every day and never give up on their dreams.”

Ms Amanda Chong, lawyer, writer, social justice advocate, and Her World’s Young Woman Achiever 2022, said: “I am honoured to be recognised for my work in expanding the space of compassion through the arts and advocacy. It is my hope that there will be room for every woman and girl to thrive in Singapore, and that the weight of inequality, and stereotypes of gender violence will not hold us back. This award is a great encouragement for me to continue working alongside others toward a more just and gentle world.”

Both award winners are featured in the October issue of Her World, which is out now on newsstands. The Her World Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever Awards 2022 is organised by SPH Media Limited, with support from official partner, The Hour Glass.
