Singapore, 16 November 2023 - The winner of Harper's BAZAAR NewGen Award 2023, Lim Su Hui from LaSalle School of Arts, has been crowned today for her innovative designs that adopt an eco-friendly approach in pattern cutting and design which includes zero waste practices to achieve minimal scraps at the end of the production. Her label, byū, and collection, “Homeland”, was showcased with five other NewGen finalists’ collections at a final runway show today at Noontalk Media.
The Harper’s BAZAAR NewGen Award, is presented in partnership with Chanel and supported by knowledge partner Istituto Marangoni this year. On top of a cash prize of $10,000, Su Hui will receive a sponsorship for a 15-month master degree course at the London campus of Istituto Marangoni worth over $55,000. Her collection will also be showcased in an upcoming Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore fashion spread before being retailed at Design Orchard.
Mr Kenneth Goh, Editor-In-Chief of Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore, said: “In pursuit of a more circular approach to sustainable fashion, Lim Su Hui went for a zero waste practice in pattern cutting. With her final collection inspired by the architecture, shape, form, history and the colours of Fort Canning, Su Hui created a romantic collection of dresses and separates that stood out for its sophisticated palette and fluid shapes. Why we decided to choose her as the winning collection was the beautiful medley of storytelling, coupled with a deep respect for iconic spaces in Singapore and a steadfast belief that beauty doesn’t have to come at the price of gratuitous wastage.”
The finalists were judged on their talent, creativity, business acumen, commercial viability, consistency, drive and grit. The judging panel consists of:
- Ms Vanessa Lim, General Manager, Communications of Chanel
- Mr Lai Chan, Established Singapore Couturier
- Mr Kenneth Goh, Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore
