Lianhe Zaobao celebrates centennial with a brand refresh and four commemorative projects

Media Releases

Singapore, 6 September 2023: To mark a century of journalistic endeavours, Lianhe Zaobao (LHZB), the flagship Chinese-language daily of SPH Media, celebrates its 100th anniversary today with a brand refresh and four commemorative projects.

With the brand refresh, LHZB will deliver its brand promise of “Leading Conversations, With You” by continuing to provide trusted and unbiased journalism, and enabling its readers to be more knowledgeable, insightful and future-ready.

Readers were greeted today with a refreshed look and new LHZB logo across the print edition and digital platforms. The print edition spots new mastheads on its front page and sections (Singapore, World, China, Sports, Business and Opinion). The homepage of the LHZB’s website (zaobao.com.sg) has been revamped to facilitate easier navigation and offer an enhanced reading experience.

The refreshed LHZB is also accompanied with a new content strategy. Content will be presented in more relatable and informative ways, such as the introduction of explainers “早知“ (“LHZB Knows”) to explain current issues and provide answers to questions which interest readers. More videos and audio content will accompany news articles to facilitate better understanding of complex issues.

New content series and programmes will also be gradually rolled out in the coming year to provide more insights and analyses on issues that matter to LHZB’s domestic and global audiences. The LHZB website and app will also be optimised progressively to improve user experience.

In addition to the brand refresh, LHZB has launched a string of commemorative projects to mark its centennial. These include the LHZB Centennial Oral History website (https://interactive.zaobao.com/zaobao-centennial/oral-history/), a commemorative book "Our Story, An Oral History of Lianhe Zaobao", an online interactive graphic “A Scroll through A Century” and an online documentary series “The News Catcher”.

These commemorative projects were launched by Mr Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance today at the Afro-Asia Building, the former site of Nanyang Siang Pau’s office. LHZB was formed with the merger of Nanyang Siang Pau and Sin Chew Jit Poh. More information on the commemorative projects can be found in the Annex.

At the centennial event, the Chinese Media Group of SPH Media also gifted the oral history research materials to the National Archives of Singapore.

A marketing campaign across print, digital and social media will be rolled out in October to promote the refreshed LHZB.

Mr Goh Sin Teck, Editor of Lianhe Zaobao, said: “From the black and white print layout in its early years to the diversity of multimedia content, LHZB’s journey has been one of adaptation and innovation. Not only did we embrace change, we also harnessed the momentum of change to transcend the confines of ink and paper. LHZB stands as a testament to the power of transformation, offering not just text, but a fusion of visuals, sounds, and interactive experiences that caters to different audiences. Our new brand promise and content strategy signify our commitment to continue to adapt and innovate with our audiences, as we embark on our next centennial.”

He added: “I would like to thank our cherished readers, devoted audiences and partners for your unwavering support. As we celebrate this centennial milestone with a refreshed LHZB, we remain committed to being your steadfast beacon of truth and trusted companion in the ever-changing landscape of information.”
