As part of its centennial celebrations, Lianhe Zaobao (ZB) launched the "100 Years of Singapore Art" (狮城美术 • 百年光华), an art exhibition jointly organised with Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC).
Dr Tan See Leng, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, was the Guest-of-Honour at the opening ceremony held today. It was attended by more than 200 participants including members of Singapore’s Chinese art community, cultural groups as well as the participating artists and their families.
The exhibition is held at Level 7, Multi-purpose Hall at SCCC, 1 Straits Boulevard, Singapore 018906, and it is open to the public for free from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm, from 2 June to 16 July 2023. It showcases 21 art pieces from SPH Media’s Chinese Media Group collection. The exhibits include works by Chen Wen Hsi, Chen Chong Swee, Liu Kang, Pan Shou and several other Singapore artists.
Also on display are Qiu Zhai Art Studio's exclusive collection of 149 paintings and calligraphic works by 80 renowned Singapore artists ranging from artwork done with oils, pastels, watercolours and Chinese inks.
The display from both collections covers generations of artists from the past century, including pioneer artists and their contemporary counterparts, showcasing local Chinese art and Chinese news media history.
Mr Chan Kok Hua, the owner of Qiu Zhai Art Studio, said: “ ‘100 Years of Singapore Art’ is more than an exhibition, it is a celebration of Singapore's artistic spirit and artists. Their stories and visions are woven into each artwork, creating a vibrant tapestry that represents our cultural narrative. I invite Singaporeans to join us in celebrating Singaporean art. Together, we can elevate Singaporean art to new heights and inspire future generations.”
The opening ceremony also witnessed the launch of two art books:
- “From Gifts to Treasures - the Chinese Media Group Collection”《雅意:新加坡华文报藏书画撷珍》- published by SPH Media’s Focus Publishing in commemoration of ZB’s centennial celebrations. The 188-page book retails at S$78 (without GST) on Lianhe Zaobao’s zShop. The book is also available at leading bookstores.
- “100 Years of Singapore Art – A Qiu Zhai Singapore Art Collection”《狮城美术 • 百年光华 ——新加坡秋斋藏狮城美术》- produced by Qiu Zhai Art Studio. The book features the studio’s famous collection of Chinese ink painting, of which many are on display at the exhibition.
Mr Goh Sin Teck, ZB’s Editor said: “The collection of the art pieces gifted to us over the past 100 years, is an invaluable asset to the Chinese Media Group. These artworks symbolise the close relationships between the artists and the Chinese media over these years. We hope that readers of the book, “From Gifts to Treasures - the Chinese Media Group Collection”, and visitors to the exhibition would be able to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Singapore’s rich history and cultural heritage.”
Mr Low Sze Wee, CEO of SCCC commented, “SCCC is delighted to be able to work on this outstanding exhibition of Singapore art, which comprises works from the collection of SPH Media’s Chinese Media Group and Qiu Zhai Art Studio. Following SCCC’s last exhibition featuring artworks from the collections of local clans, this latest collaboration is a continuation of SCCC’s efforts to showcase the richness and diversity of artworks found in our local private and public collections.”
