Singapore, 29 April 2023 – This year’s National Chinese Challenge (NCC) saw Dunman High School and Tanjong Katong Primary School clinching the top positions in the secondary school and primary school categories, respectively. The finals took place this afternoon at CapitaLand Mall Bugis+, with the winners receiving the awards from the event's Guest of Honour, Ms Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State for Education and Manpower, and Chairperson of the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning.

Raffles Girls Primary School, Rosyth School and Nan Hua Primary School also celebrated their remarkable achievements as they clinched the second, third and fourth places respectively in the primary category, while Raffles Girls Secondary School, Nanyang Girls High School, and CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls School came in second, third, and fourth respectively, in the secondary school category.

Co-organised by SPH Media’s Chinese Media Group (CMG) and Nanyang Girls High School, NCC has been a platform for Chinese language learners to gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese language and culture. The annual competition was established in 2003 to encourage a love for Chinese culture and to cultivate an interest in learning Chinese among students.

In its 10th edition, the competition attracted over 1,500 primary and secondary school students in the preliminary round held on 25 March 2023. Six secondary schools with the highest average scores made it to the semi-finals, while the top four primary schools went straight into the finals. At the finals, each team of four students was tested on their knowledge of the Chinese language which included a translation of commonly used terms from English to Chinese, pronunciation, literature, current affairs, and general knowledge.

To mark Lianhe Zaobao’s centennial celebrations, this year’s NCC was designed to include news topics and content drawn from a wide range of news platforms. The aim was to encourage the reading of news among young people, who can now access news in myriad formats.

The National Chinese Challenge is co-presented by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and supported by the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning, National Translation Committee, Speak Mandarin Campaign, and CapitaLand Mall Bugis+.
