Singapore, 1 October 2026 - Amid a rapidly evolving and fragmented media landscape, SPH Media continues to strengthen its position through sustained digital transformation and a multi-channel, multi-platform, multi-format and multi-tonal portfolio strategy.
Today, SPH Media's stable of titles reaches nearly nine out of 10 Singaporeans every week, while its journalism and innovation continue to earn international recognition from organisations such as International News Media Association (INMA) and World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA).
As part of ongoing Board renewal and good governance, various members of the Board of SPH Media Holdings (SPHMH) are stepping down, with some having served on the Board since 2021. New directors are also joining the Board, bringing with them expertise in areas such as technology, artificial intelligence, as well as community and youth engagement, to support SPH Media's next phase of growth. The leadership team at SPH Media is also being refreshed to ensure that the Company remains well-positioned for the future.
The key leadership and Board changes with effect from 1 October are as set out:
- Mr Khaw Boon Wan, having served for five years as Chairman of both SPH Media Trust (SMT) and SPHMH since 2021, retires.
- Mr Khaw is succeeded by Mr Chan Yeng Kit, SPH Media’s Chief Executive Officer. Mr Chan becomes Executive Chairman of SMT and SPHMH, assuming an expanded leadership role that incorporates his current responsibilities.
- Mr Kuek Yu Chuang, Deputy CEO of SPH Media, is appointed Managing Director of SPH Media. As Managing Director, Mr Kuek will drive day-to-day operations and oversee the whole of SPH Media including plans and initiatives for the immediate to medium term. He continues to be responsible for the company's overall performance and growth, and joins the SMT and SPHMH Boards.
- The SPHMH Board welcomes Mr Abbas Ali Mohamed Irshad, Head of Corporate Affairs for ASEAN at Tata Consultancy Services; Mr Edward Chen, Chief AI Officer at NCS Group; Ms Kohe Hasan, Group CEO of M Kapital Holdings; and Ms Liew Wei Li, Director-General of Education. They join existing Board members, Mr Chan, Ms Elaine Yew, Mr Max Loh, Mr Philip Lee and Ms Quah Ley Hoon.
- Mr Patrick Daniel, Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Ms Lim Mei and Mr Bahren Shaari retire from the SPHMH Board. The list of directors can be found here. The bios of the new Board members and the Chinese names of all the Board members are in the Annexes.
SPH Media stands on the shoulders of its past leaders, Board Chairmen and Members, as well as CEOs and Editors, who left a rich legacy for the organisation to build on. The company extends its heartfelt thanks to all, and is especially indebted to Mr Khaw and the outgoing Board Members, whose strategic leadership was instrumental in guiding the organisation through its transition to a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG). Their leadership has also been instrumental in steering the company through an extraordinary period of disruption and transformation, from the COVID-19 pandemic to the shifts reshaping the media landscape. Their contributions have strengthened the company’s resilience and helped position it well for its next chapter.
Mr Khaw Boon Wan said, "Stepping down after steering SPH Media through its transition to a CLG marks the end of a rewarding chapter for me. Building this new foundation was challenging especially with the evolving media landscape, but I was supported by a good leadership team and the people of SPH Media. SPH Media is in a strong position, and I am pleased to pass the baton to our new Executive Chairman, Yeng Kit, whose strong and thoughtful leadership and strategic acumen are what SPH Media requires. I have confidence that under his stewardship, the Company will successfully continue to evolve with the changing media landscape, meet the needs of our audiences, and most importantly, fulfil its critical role in engendering an informed citizenry."
On the company, Mr Chan said, “SPH Media is far more than a newspaper company. With more than 120 channels spanning websites, apps, social media, messaging platforms, video and podcasts, we are present across the digital spaces where Singaporeans consume news and content. What sets us apart is that we are proudly Singaporean, with a legacy of trust dating back to 1845 and Singaporeans at the heart of what we do. As we transform, we will continue to create content that not only informs and enriches the mind, but also provides food for thought, sparks conversations and speaks to the heart and soul of Singapore.”
On his new role, Mr Kuek said, “The media landscape continues to evolve. SPH will need to continue leading with its trusted journalism, and bridge such editorial strengths with fast-evolving technology. This will deepen reader engagement on SPH’s owned-and-operated platforms, while making sure that accurate news coverage is conveyed across generative and agentic AI environments.”
SPH Media will continue to stay ahead with timely Board and leadership refreshes, as it continues its critical mission of keeping Singapore and Singaporeans informed through many more national and news moments.
