Students from St Gabriel’s Secondary School and Nan Hua Primary School emerged champions of the National Chinese Challenge 2024
Singapore, 27 April 2024 - The annual National Chinese Challenge (NCC) that took place at One Punggol this afternoon saw a close battle between the finalists in both Primary and Secondary School categories. St. Gabriel's Secondary School and Nan Hua Primary School clinched the top position in their respective categories. Both St. Gabriel's Secondary School and Nan Hua Primary School are first time champions in the NCC.
Tao Nan School and Tanjong Katong Primary School both tied for second place in the primary school category. Raffles Girls' School (Secondary) and Nanyang Girls' High School were second and third in the secondary school category. (Please see Annex for the full list of winners).
The winners received the awards from Guest of Honour, Ms Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State for Education and Manpower, and Chairperson of the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL).
In the finals, teams consisting of three students each were tested on their knowledge of the Chinese language, including literature, current affairs and general knowledge.
The NCC, which is in its 11th edition this year, aims to enhance students’ interest in learning Chinese, expand their language abilities and reinforce Chinese as a living language relevant to our culture and society. The competition provides a platform for participants to display their language abilities and interact with other Chinese language learners.
This year’s competition attracted the highest number of participants for the preliminary round with more than 2,400 students from 165 primary and secondary schools taking the written test in March. Six secondary schools with the highest average scores made it to the semi-finals and competed to be the four finalists, while the top six primary schools went straight into the finals.
Ms Tan Leng Tuan, Young Audience Editor of SPH Media’s Chinese Media Group said, “Beyond the scores and standings, the heart of the National Chinese Challenge lies in catalysing the enduring passion for learning. As we congratulate all participants and celebrate the event’s successful completion, let us remember that the journey of learning is about the commitment to continuous growth and exploration”.
The NCC is co-organised by SPH Media’s Chinese Media Group and Nanyang Girls’ High School, co-presented by Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, sponsored by Do Qoo and supported by the CPCLL, the National Translation Committee and Speak Mandarin Campaign.
