About Tamil Murasu

Tamil Murasu was first published on 6 July 1935 as a weekly tabloid of the Tamils Reform Association, with Mr Thamizhavel G Sarangapany as its editor. It aimed to educate Tamil immigrants and foster a sense of rootedness to Singapore. Tamil Murasu’s name draws reference to a practice in ancient kingdoms where Murasu drums were sounded for community announcements. In a similar vein, it adopts the slogan ‘Voice of the community’.

Mr Sarangapany took over the publication as the sole proprietor in May 1936 and launched it as a broadsheet newspaper. He was also a champion of social causes and advocated for Tamil to be recognised as one of Singapore’s official languages.

88 years on, Tamil Murasu is a newspaper of record that provides extensive news coverage for the Indian community. Today, it also offers its news digitally on its website and mobile app, going beyond written articles to offer content through various mediums such as videos and podcasts.
