Honouring the best Getai artistes at STOMP’s Getai Awards

Singapore, 12 July 2010 – Top Getai artistes in Singapore will be honoured at STOMP's Getai Awards on Wednesday, 14 July, at Kreta Ayer Square. The audience can look forward to an exhilarating 'Dian Yin San Tai Zi' (电音三太子) opening act, and live performances by the winning getai artistes.

The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Hosted by well-known radio presenter Huang Wen Hong from SPHUnionWorks’ Chinese station, Radio 100.3, and Lin Ru Ping, veteran radio, TV and getai artiste, the occasion will be graced by Mr David Ong BBM, Chairman of the Kreta Ayer - Kim Seng Citizens' Consultative Committee.

The Getai Awards was initiated by STOMP in 2006 to preserve and promote the uniquely Singaporean tradition of stage entertainers who perform during the annual Hungry Ghost Festival. By showcasing the performances on the English-based website, STOMP extends the reach of this entertainment art form well beyond its traditional Chinese-speaking audience.

STOMP, a social networking and citizen journalism portal of media group Singapore Press Holdings, will be giving out 20 awards at the presentation ceremony. Half of the awards will be presented to the STOMP People’s Choice winners. These winners are the top 10 artistes who have garnered the most number of votes over a 4-month period, by the public who have viewed their performances on videos hosted in the Getai A-go-go section of STOMP.

The online poll, which started in September 2009 and ended in December 2009, garnered a total close to 1 million votes.

Five out of the ten most popular artistes have been performing as getai entertainers for five years or more.

The rest of the awards will be presented to the 10 Special Awards winners for the following categories:

  1. Best Getai Band
  2. Best Costume
  3. Best Newcomer
  4. Best Foreign Singer
  5. Best Female Host
  6. Best Male Host
  7. Best Getai Performing Group
  8. Most Watched Online Video
  9. Best Female Artiste
  10. Best Male Artiste

The judges for the Special Awards were: Mr Zhong Yeow Nan, President of the Singapore Artiste Association; Mr Chew V Ming, Editor of STOMP; Ms Lew Lee Chin, Deputy Local News Editor of Shin Min Daily News; Mr Glenn Low, Life & Entertainment News Editor of my paper; and Mr Aaron Tan, Director of LEX(S) Entertainment.

The event is presented by STOMP with the support of Kreta Ayer Community Club and LEX(S) Entertainment Productions.
