Biggest Shape Run 2010 flags off this Sunday

Singapore, 22 July 2010 – Some 10,000 women runners are set to throng Nicoll Highway this Sunday, July 25, for the Shape Run 2010, organised by Shape Singapore, a publication licensed under American Media Inc. and published by SPH Magazines Pte Ltd.

Guest of Honour, Mr Teo Ser Luck, Mayor, North East District, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports & Ministry of Transport, will flag off the 10km category at 7am, followed by the 5km at 7.30am.

This year's Shape Run – the fifth and biggest edition of Singapore's first women-only running race – sees a jump in the number of ladies taking up the tougher 10km challenge. Of the field, 44 per cent will tackle the 10km route, which will pass by landmarks such as the National Stadium and Kallang Riverside Park. In the 2009 and 2008 events, 39 and 38 per cent respectively took up the longer distance.

The Shape Run has been growing from strength to strength, from 2,500 runners in the inaugural event in 2006, to 6,000 (in 2007) and then 8,000 (in 2008 and 2009).

“It is a sign that women in Singapore are getting more serious about the sport and want to push themselves further,” says Jeanette Wang, Associate Editor, Shape. “Of course, the 5km race, which is more suited for first-timers and novices, still attracts the majority of runners, as we believe it is a distance that most women can complete with minimal training.”

The Corporate category, introduced in 2008, has also seen increased participation with 129 teams, up from 101 in 2009 and 45 in 2008. Teams consist of three to five members, all running 5km each. The top three times of each team are tallied, with the lowest total winning.

Winners of the 10km and 5km Individual categories will each get $1,000 and $500 cash respectively, along with fabulous products and services. The second to 10th place finishers of both events will also be awarded prizes. The top three corporate teams will also receive prizes, with the winning team bagging an additional $1,000 cash.

All participants will get a Runner's Kit after completing the race – a Shape sports bag filled with beauty and health products and vouchers, nutritious snacks, spa vouchers, fitness trial passes and many other freebies. They will also get a race certificate with their personal timing and a finisher’s bracelet after the run.

In conjunction with the Shape Run, a three-day Shape Run Carnival, was held from July 9-11 at the Marina Square Atrium. The carnival, featuring over 20 merchants with the latest health, beauty and fitness products, was a hit with participants and the public alike.

Shape Run 2010 is proudly presented by Japanese car maker Subaru and co-presented by Nike Running, with Kellogg’s as the main sponsor. Other sponsors include Aibi, BIC Shaver, Biotherm, California Raisins, CitiSpa, H-TWO-O, Marigold Yoghurt, ParkwayHealth, True Fitness and Vitagen Collagen.
