Singapore, 5 August 2010 --- Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) won a total of 7 awards (1 Gold, 5 Silver and 1 Bronze) at the 9th Asia Media Awards 2010, affirming SPH's status as the leading media group in the region. The Awards aim to promote the highest publishing standards in Asia and the Middle-East, and were presented by WAN-IFRA, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, at a gala dinner held yesterday (4 August) at the Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Winning a Gold award in the Best In Print Award (circulation below 150,000 copies) category was Malay daily Berita Harian. The award shows the ability of newspapers to print consistently high quality according to international standards (ISO 12647).
SPH's English flagship newspaper, The Straits Times, was awarded a Silver award in the Best in Design Award - Newspaper Front Page Design category.
In addition, The Straits Times' Mind Your Body won a Silver award in the Best in Special Coverage Award - Newspaper Special Section category for its Health & You supplement, while ZbBz, a monthly magazine published by SPH's Chinese Newspapers Division, won a Bronze award in the Best in Special Coverage Award - Newspaper Special Issue category.
The Special Coverage Award recognises newspapers' special sections and magazines' special issues which demonstrate high standards in content, originality, overall design and photography.
The New Paper (TNP) won a Silver award in the Best in Infographics Award - Newspaper Infographics category, which recognises excellence in design, usefulness and clarity of information conveyed in both breaking news and nonbreaking news in newspaper infographics. The winning entry was by TNP design chief Lee Hup Kheng and infographics journalist Teoh Yi Chie for the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in India.
Two awards were won in the Best in Design Award categories. These were presented to entries whose overall design, originality and content have achieved levels of excellence deserving of recognition. Entries were judged not only on design but also on how design was used to project the content. Singapore's first bilingual newspaper, my paper, won a Silver for Best in Design Award - Newspaper Overall Design.
The second award was won by Singapore's No. 1 interior magazine Home & Décor, published by SPH Magazines, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SPH. Home & Décor took the Silver in the Best in Design Award - Magazine Overall Design category. SPH Magazines won the same award last year for its luxury magazine The Peak.
Mr Alan Chan, CEO of SPH, says: "SPH takes great pride in our publications. We ensure that our newspapers and magazines consistently give the best quality and value to our readers and advertisers.
