SPH awarded Distinguished Patron of the Arts for the 18th consecutive year

Singapore, 2 September 2010 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) is honoured with the Distinguished Patron of the Arts award for the 18th consecutive year. It is the highest honour accorded to arts sponsors by the National Arts Council.

The 2010 Patron of the Arts Awards were presented by Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Acting Minister for Information, Communications & the Arts, this evening at the School of the Arts.

SPH's major arts sponsorships cover a wide spectrum of genres. Through the SPH Gift of Music series, the company brings free concerts by national orchestras, young bands and local musicians to the public all around the island. SPH is also the Silver Anniversary Sponsor of the Singapore Dance Theatre, and a keen supporter of other arts and cultural activities.

In addition, SPH Foundation received the Friend of the Arts award. Set up in 2003, SPH Foundation has supported many arts events, including theatre productions such as
To Kill a Mocking Bird and The Crab Flower Club by Toy Factory, as well as the Singapore Writers Festival, the most important event in Singapore's literary arts calendar.

Ms Ginney Lim, SPH's Executive Vice-President of Corporate Communications and General Manager of the SPH Foundation, said: "We are honoured to be recognised for the 18th consecutive year for our contributions to the Singapore arts scene. The Distinguished Patron of the Arts Award is a testimony of our role as a responsible corporate citizen in engaging minds and enriching lives through our support for the arts. Our concerted efforts to make arts accessible to the community through projects such as the SPH Gift of Music concert series, the SPH 25th Anniversary Gala Concert, as well as the Singapore Writers Festival, have enabled various home-grown arts groups to showcase their talent to Singaporeans from all walks of life."

Radio 100.3, a Chinese language radio station under SPH UnionWorks, a subsidiary of SPH, also received the Distinguished Patron of the Arts Award for its sponsorship of productions by Chinese theatre companies Drama Box and The Theatre Practice.

omy.sg, SPH's bilingual news and entertainment portal, received the Arts Supporter Award at a separate ceremony held on 31 August.
