SPH sponsors National Primary Schools Floorball Championships

Singapore, 27 December 2010 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) will be the title sponsor for the 5th National Primary Schools Floorball Championships 2011. Organised by the Singapore Floorball Association (SFA), the event, supported and sanctioned by the Co-curricular Activities Branch (CCAB) of the Ministry of Education, will be renamed the SPH National Primary Schools Floorball Championships 2011.

Floorball was only recognised by the Singapore Primary Schools Sports Council (SPSSC) as an official sport under the sports and games calendar in 2007 although it has been played in Singapore since 1996 by students at tertiary institutions. Every year, more than 1,100 students representing 26 schools and 64 teams take part in the Championships.

Students compete in two categories, namely the Senior Division (Boys and Girls aged 13 years and under or Primary 6 level), and Junior Division (Boys and Girls aged 11 years and under or Primary 1 to 5 level). The Senior Division players will compete from mid January to late February while the Junior Division players will compete from end March to end April.

Floorball is a team sport similar to ice hockey. A modified version of the sport is played at the primary school level. The objective of the game is to score as many goals against the opposition. Each team fields five players – four outfield and one goalkeeper (the adult version is played with six players per team) and each match is played for shorter periods and in a smaller rink. The game is played with a stick (or shaft) made of light-weight material such as fibreglass or carbon fibre and a light-weight perforated plastic ball.

To date, there are more than 10,000 players representing 200 schools and institutions and 100 clubs in Singapore. For more information on floorball, visit www.sfa.sg and www.floorball.org.

Ms Ginney Lim, Executive Vice-President of SPH's Corporate Communications, said, “Sports promote social, physical and psychological development, and inculcate lifelong values such as teamwork, fair play and discipline amongst the youth. Floorball is a fun and exciting sport which can be easily picked up by anyone. With SPH's sponsorship, we look forward to seeing more students playing the sport.”

Mr Sani Mohd Salim, President of the Singapore Floorball Association said, “We are pleased to have SPH’s sponsorship for next year’s National Primary Schools Floorball Championships 2011. In the last four years, we have seen the sport grown significantly with more students taking up the sport. SPH’s support will help us build up the public profile of the sport of Floorball and create greater awareness and interest among students and schools for the national primary schools levels.”

Past winners of the championship included Pasir Ris Primary School, Xishan Primary, Keming Primary and Huamin Primary.

Entry forms for the SPH National Primary Schools Floorball Championships 2011 are available at Pasir Ris Primary School (National Convenor) from 27 December 2010. Registration closes on Friday, 7 January 2011.
