SPH Red Apple Day 2011

Call for blood donors to come forward during festive season

Singapore, 10 Jan 2011 - Singapore Press Holdings Ltd (SPH) will be holding its annual blood donation drive - the SPH Red Apple Day - on 25 January to encourage its staff and the public to donate blood during the festive season.

The event, to be organised together with the Singapore Red Cross Society (Singapore Red Cross), will be held at the auditorium of News Centre in Toa Payoh North between 11am and 5pm. The first hour (11am to 12 noon) will be reserved for SPH staff. The public can donate their blood from 12 noon onwards.

The Bloodbank requires about 350 units of blood each day to meet the needs of hospital patients undergoing critical transplant surgery or suffering from haematological cancers, and to cater for bleeding emergencies. It sees a seasonal dip in blood donations during festive periods.

SPH launched the annual event back in 2001 as one of the company´s ways of contributing to society as a good corporate citizen. Traditionally, the event was held in the middle of the year. For the first time this year, SPH has decided to hold an additional blood donation drive during the festive period to help the Bloodbank tide over the dry spell.

The SPH Red Apple Day is supported by SPH MediaBoxOffice, AsiaOne, SPH UnionWorks´ 91.3 FM and Radio 100.3, Marigold, Cerebos, Gardenia, Nestle, Centrum and Benelux.
