Lianhe Zaobao launches Thumbs Up Junior for primary one and two students

Singapore, 25 March 2011 --- Lianhe Zaobao, the Chinese flagship newspaper of media group Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), has launched a Chinese student newspaper, Thumbs Up Junior. The first issue was out on 22 March 2011.

The new publication is in line with the Ministry of Education's efforts to enhance the use of Mother Tongue Languages through the Active Learners, Proficient Users approach.

The 20-page, full-colour Thumbs Up Junior is published fortnightly on Tuesdays for primary one and two students. The newspaper aims to enhance their proficiency in the Chinese language through materials which are outside of their regular school syllabus.

Thumbs Up Junior covers a wide range of content, including local and foreign news, human-interest stories, Chinese culture, quizzes and riddles, conversation practices and hanyu pinyin learning. The newspaper helps improve reading and listening comprehension skills of the readers, and provides them with up-to-date news content. It makes learning the Chinese language a fun and lively experience.

Ms Lim Soon Lan, Editor of Thumbs Up Junior, said: "By introducing Thumbs Up Junior to the lower primary students, we are exposing them to the world of newspapers and providing them with the opportunity to learn Chinese in a fun and relaxing way."

Thumbs Up Junior is also supported by the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language. Teachers from the centre have specially designed activities in the newspapers to boost the language skills of the readers.

Ms Lee Huay Leng, Assistant Editor of Lianhe Zaobao, said: "Producing a meaningful student newspaper is Lianhe Zaobao's way of giving back to society via a cultural medium. We hope this quality publication will be read by more young readers."
