Singapore, 13 May 2011 ---The Chinese Newspapers Division of leading media group Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and Scorpio East Productions will be presenting an acclaimed dance drama "Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva" by the Taiyuan Dance Troupe from Shanxi Province, China at the Esplanade Theatre from 16 to 18 June, 2011.
This mega production is specially brought in to help raise funds for President's Challenge 2011.
The dance drama, led by a 90-member strong cast, is the latest work of Zhang Jigang, a famous Chinese choreographer best-known for directing the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The production, which is making its debut in Singapore, generated rave reviews when it was performed in Beijing.
Performed outside of China for the first time, this production is unlike other "Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva" dance productions which were previously staged in Singapore.
In the story, the ancient country of Dai is attacked by a plague and the king himself falls ill. With his life at stake, the youngest of his three daughters sets out on an arduous journey to search for the magical lotus flower which can save his life. The eldest daughter who covets the throne, sends a servant, Tongzi, to rob the princess of the flower and prevent the king from surviving. After suffering countless hardships, the princess finally finds the flower; but to save her people, she must become the Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva and continue to suffer hardship while helping others.
The story is told through 12 odes with 12 dances created by Zhang. Each ode and dance can be viewed as a separate episode or together as an integrated story.
Mr Lim Huan Chiang, Vice President of Cultural Industry Promotion of Chinese Newspapers Division, said: "The objective of bringing in this mega production is to promote Chinese arts and culture as well as raise funds for charities under the President’s Challenge 2011."
The net proceeds from the sale of show tickets on the opening night (16 June) will go to the appointed beneficiaries under President's Challenge 2011. The exclusive presenter for the opening night is Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple.
Since 2002, SPH's Chinese Newspapers Division has organised various charity events including the Youth Talent Concert to raise funds for President's Challenge. The New Paper also helped to raise funds for the Challenge through its popular Be Yourself Day charity event in schools. In addition, SPH, as a group, also contributed to President's Challenge by sponsoring $200,000 worth of advertisement space annually to promote the various charity events under the Challenge.
