Books galore and more at Singapore Book Fair 2011

Singapore, 27 May 2011 --- The Singapore Book Fair 2011 (新加坡书展)will take place from 27 May to 5 June at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Exhibition Hall 402 - 404.

About 100 exhibitors from 10 countries across Asia will showcase over 300,000 books, as well as teachers’ resource and supplementary materials, educational products, periodicals, enrichment programmes and software. Admission to the exhibition is free.

For the first time, exhibitors from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and India will take part in the Singapore Book Fair, expanding its range of books and educational materials.

To promote reading amongst the young, the organisers, with the support of Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, have issued book vouchers totalling S$50,000 to 1,250 needy children through four self-help groups, namely the Chinese Development Assistance Council, Mendaki, Sinda and the Singapore Eurasian Association. Each child will receive $40 worth of book vouchers to purchase their books at the event.

Over 400,000 visitors are expected to attend the Fair, which offers a host of events, including book launches, meet-the-author sessions, educational talks, industry focused seminars, and treasure hunts.

Ms Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State for Information, Communications and the Arts, and for The Environment and Water Resources, will be the Guest of Honour at the opening on 27 May 2011. She will also present the Inspiring Chinese Language Teachers Award(全国模范华文教师奖)to the 13 winners. (see attached list of winners)

The Singapore Book Fair is jointly organised by Singapore Press Holdings' Chinese Newspapers Division (新加坡报业控股华文报集团) and Marshall Cavendish Business Information Pte Ltd (名创商业资讯私人有限公司). It is supported by the Singapore Ministry of Education(新加坡教育部), National Library Board(国家图书馆管理局), ASEAN Book Publishers Association(亚细安图书出版协会), Singapore Book Publishers Association(新加坡出版商协会), National Book Development Council of Singapore(全国书籍发展理事会), Lianhe Zaobao, Lianhe Wanbao, Shin Min Daily News, My Paper, zbComma and Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre(新达新加坡国际会议与展览中心).

Highlights of Singapore Book Fair 2011:

Wide variety of books
A wide range of books can be found under one roof, including the latest best-sellers, English and Chinese fiction, children’s books, teachers’ resource, supplementary materials, magazines, comics, motivational and self-help books, biographies, as well as books on travel and nature. In addition, there are IQ games, board games, electronic educational materials and software.

Budding Writers’ Project
The Singapore Book Fair will offer a rare insight into the publishing process. At the 90-sq metres central exhibit, visitors will be taken on a journey through the publishing process, from editorial, illustration, design, printing, digital conversion to book sales. A past winning entry of the Budding Writers Project, a competition organised by Marshall Cavendish to develop the creative talents of students, will be used to illustrate the different stages involved.

Meet-the-author sessions
Renowned authors and educationists will make special appearances at the book fair and autograph new books. They include local authors James Suresh, a humour writer and a co-creator of local comic characters Mr Kiasu and Kopi Thiam, and Xiaohan 小寒, an accomplished Mandopop lyricist.

Overseas authors such as Tsai Shih Ping 蔡诗萍, a Taiwanese author and award-winning broadcast host, will speak at a forum on 28 May 2011 (1pm to 3pm), at Hall 404. He will be sharing his writing experience and the evolution of his book topics, from political commentary to love and kinship. Bryan Davis, author of the best-selling books Dragons in Our Midst and Oracles of Fire series, will speak on 29 May 2011, 3pm – 4pm, at Hall 404 activity stage.

Fun-filled activities and educational talks/seminars

Talks on memory improvement, personal finance, Chinese Diaspora, Chinese medicine, geomancy and meditation will be held at the fair. There are also special talks on essay writing and creative writing for students.

One of the forum speakers is Master Xiao Hong Chi (萧宏慈老师) from Beijing, China who specialises in La Jin Pai Da Therapy (拉筋拍打功). He will be giving two free talks cum demonstrations on 4 and 5 June 2011 respectively. Apart from best-selling author Bryan Davis who will make a special appearance, writer Chin Ran Xin, one of the 13 writers involved in documenting the Chinese diaspora in the book ‘Where The Sun Shines, There Are Chinese’, will also be speaking.

Well-known media personality Billy Wang (东方比利) will share his experience on battling cancer on 4 June 2011 (11.30am - 1.00pm) and 5 June 2011 (12.00pm - 2.00pm) respectively.

Inter-school competitions

The following inter-school competitions will also be held at the Singapore Book Fair:

    · National Secondary Schools Xiang Sheng (cross talk) Competition 2011
    · National Chinese Folk Song Singing Competition for Primary Schools 2011
    · National Secondary Schools Chinese News Production Competition 2011

Exhibitions by Sphere Exhibits

Two other exhibitions, namely Licence2Play and Heart, Mind & Body Festival, organised by Sphere Exhibits, will be held concurrently with the Singapore Book Fair.

Licence2Play, which showcases the latest in consumer games, will be held from 27 to 29 May at Hall 401. The Heart, Mind & Body Festival will be held from 2 to 5 June. Practitioners specialising in the fields of Holistic Wellness, Arts & Crafts, Personal Development, Life Coaching, Yoga & Spa, Organic Products will be featured.

Lucky Draw

For every $30 spent at the Singapore Book Fair, visitors will be given a lucky draw coupon. They stand to win attractive prizes such as electronic gadgets and products.
