Dance drama Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva raises over $100,000 for President’s Challenge 2011

Singapore, 16 June 2011 --- Acclaimed dance drama Thousand Hand Bodhisattva, specially brought in from China by Lianhe Zaobao, the Chinese flagship newspaper of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), has raised over $100,000 for President's Challenge 2011.

The funds raised came from the sale of tickets for the opening night performance, as well as donations by corporate and individual donors. The money will support the elderly, disabled, families and youths from the 28 charities under President's Challenge 2011.

President S R Nathan is the Guest of Honour for the opening night on 16 June.

Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva is performed by the Taiyuan Dance Troupe from Shanxi Province, China at the Esplanade Theatre from 16 to 18 June 2011.

Led by a 90-member strong cast, Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva is the latest work of Zhang Jigang, who is best-known for being the co-director and choreographer of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It took seven years to conceptualise and produce this mega dance production which boasts a giant rotating stage with LED lights.

This production, which is making its debut in Singapore, generated rave reviews in Beijing and Taiyuan where it premiered in April this year. Performing outside of China for the first time, it is unlike other "Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva" dance productions which were previously staged in Singapore.

President’s Challenge is an annual series of activities to get the community involved in helping the less fortunate and to raise funds for the social service sector.

The Chinese Newspapers Division of SPH has been a strong supporter of President's Challenge over the years. Since 2002, it has organised many community events to raise funds for charity, namely the National Treasure Hunt, Show You Care, Buy a Bear, the ZPop Charity Concert and a series of Youth Talent Concerts. Last year, it organised a Tang style fashion show called The Timeless Da Ming Palace to raise funds for President's Challenge.

Another long-time supporter of the Challenge is The New Paper. Since 2000, its signature fund-raiser Be Yourself Day has raised over $1 million. SPH has also supported President's Challenge as a Media Sponsor through the years with sponsorship of advertisement space in major newspapers such as The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao.

Amongst the corporate and individual donors who have contributed to the President's Challenge at tonight's event include Mr Lee Teck Leng Robson, Serial System Ltd, and Mrs Oei-Chu Yue Mei. They have each donated $10,000 to support the Challenge.

Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva is jointly presented by Scorpio East Productions. The opening night charity gala is sponsored by Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple.
