Singapore, 30 June 2011 – Veteran artistes of the local getai scene will pick the best new entrant to the industry with the Most Promising Newcomer award at the STOMP Getai Awards on Tuesday 5 July, at Toa Payoh Amphitheatre.
This new award is created to recognise and motivate young performers with the greatest star potential, and is in line with the theme of this year's event to honour top getai artistes: "Getai Lives On".
The event is open to the public and admission is free. A turn-out of over 5,000 is expected, almost double the number in previous years.
The Getai Awards was initiated in 2006 by STOMP, the citizen journalism and social-networking portal of media group Singapore Press Holdings (SPH). It aims to preserve and promote the uniquely Singaporean tradition of stage entertainers who perform during the annual Hungry Ghost Festival, which starts on July 31 this year. By showcasing this performance art form on its English based website, STOMP extends the reach of getai well beyond its traditional Chinese-speaking audience.
STOMP will be giving out 20 awards at the presentation ceremony, half of which will be presented to the STOMP People’s Choice winners. These winners are the top 10 artistes who have garnered the most number of votes over a four-month period from members of the public who have viewed their performances on videos hosted in the Getai A-go-go section of STOMP.
More than 1 million votes were cast by STOMP readers for their favourite artistes, in an online poll that started in September 2010 and ended in December 2010.
Ten Special Awards will also be presented:
1. STOMP Pick: Most Entertaining Act
2. Best Costume
3. Best Newcomer
4. Best Group
5. Best Female Host
6. Best Male Host
7. Most Promising Newcomer (winner to be determined on event night by getai veterans)
8. Most Watched Online Video
9. Best Female
10. Best Male
The event is presented by STOMP with the support of the Toa Payoh Central Zone ‘2’ Residents’ Committee and LEX(S) Entertainment Productions.
Your journalist, photographer and/or film crew are invited to cover this event.
