Getai Lives On at STOMP's 5th Getai Awards

Singapore, 5 July 2011 – Veterans and newcomers alike were feted at tonight’s 5th STOMP Getai Awards, themed “Getai Lives On”. The event took place at Toa Payoh Amphitheatre in front of a record turnout of 4,000.
Out of the 20 awards handed out at the presentation ceremony, half were given to the STOMP People’s Choice winners. These were the top 10 artistes who had garnered the most number of votes over a four-month period from members of the public who viewed their performances on videos hosted in the Getai A-go-go section of STOMP.
More than 1 million votes were cast by STOMP readers for their favourite artistes in an online poll from September to December 2010.
The precocious 11-year-old Leow Wen Kai walked away with the inaugural Most Promising Newcomer award, which was created to recognise and motivate young performers with the greatest star potential. The award was decided by getai veterans.
Chew V Ming, Editor of STOMP, said: “The great turnout at this year’s Getai Awards is very encouraging. It shows that STOMP is really connecting with the man in the street, which is very important for a citizen journalism site such as ours.”
The Getai Awards was initiated in 2006 by STOMP, the citizen journalism and social-networking portal of media group Singapore Press Holdings (SPH). It aims to preserve and promote the uniquely Singaporean tradition of stage entertainers who perform during the annual Hungry Ghost Festival, which starts on July 31 this year. By showcasing this performance art form on its English based website, STOMP extends the reach of getai well beyond its traditional Chinese-speaking audience.
The event was presented by STOMP with the support of the Toa Payoh Central Zone ‘2’ Residents’ Committee and LEX(S) Entertainment Productions.
