Singapore, 16 January 2013 – Six domestic helpers will be fighting it out, with a variety of cooking utensils and ingredients, to bag prizes for themselves and their employers in the “Domestic Helper Cookout” competition, a joint promotion between Singapore Press Holdings' CATS Classified and Nation Employment Pte Ltd.
The competition is organised with the aim of showcasing the invaluable contributions of domestic helpers working and living in Singapore. This year’s cookout is a sequel to last year’s joint promotion, in which extraordinary domestic helpers were nominated by their employers for their exceptional contributions in various areas – “Best Cook”, “Best All-Rounder” and “Best Caregiver”.
Last year, the nominees were judged based on the testimonials written by their employers. This year, the organisers have up the ante – the shortlisted nominees will have to demonstrate their skills in a live cooking session!
The six selected contestants had been nominated by their employers, who each submitted an entry stating his or her domestic helper’s speciality, describing briefly the ingredients, preparation and cooking methods used in dishing up each culinary delight.
They will be invited for the cookout that will be happening on 18 Jan 2013 at the Asian Food Channel Studio at Orchard Central. Three pairs of nominees and nominators will each win $300 cash and an iPad mini (32GB) worth $578, respectively; and another three pairs of nominees and nominators will win a consolation prize of a $200 hamper (each winning pair will be entitled to one hamper).
The three judges that will be preceding over the competition are Mr Desmond Chin, Chairman of Nation Employment; Mr Yeoh Wee Teck, Correspondent, The New Paper; and Ms Kho Swee Har, Correspondent, Chinese Newspapers Division.
Wiji Asih, 32, will be preparing her specialty, Nasi Lemak Istimewa (Surabaya style). This is how her employer, Marcus Tan, describes the dish: “She has a secret recipe passed down from her own family street stall business in Surabaya. She uses a unique blend of spices that really fires up your senses and taste buds and make this Nasi Lemak Istimewa so delicious. The fried chicken wings beat Kentucky Fried Chicken anytime. The Nasi Lemak rice is superbly fragrant”.
Also in the line-up is a healthier version of Roti Jala, prepared without the use of coconut cream and ghee, restaurant style dishes like Crispy Prawn with Golden Salted Egg and Merla Chilli Crab, named after its creator, Merla Araya Dellava.
You and your photographer/ videographer are invited to the cookout on 18 Jan 2013.
