Sambal Sotong is winning dish at Domestic Helper Cookout

Singapore, 18 January 2013 – Six domestic helpers fought it out at the “Domestic Helper Cookout” organised by CATS Classified & Nation Employment Pte Ltd at the Asian Food Channel Studio at Orchard Central from 11am to 2pm today. Wielding woks, spatula and an assortment of other kitchen tools and food ingredients, each of them dished up a culinary speciality that they are proudest of.

The six contestants had been nominated by their employers, who each submitted an entry stating his or her domestic helper’s speciality, describing briefly the ingredients and preparation and cooking methods used in dishing up this culinary delight.

Among the top three dishes that captured the judges’ palates and tummies was the Sambal Sotong by Ms Anik Prihatini. This deceptively simple dish was a success, thanks to the joint efforts of Anik and her employer Shahida Hamid. They chose to enter this dish for the competition because Ms Prihatini likes seafood.

Madam Hamid explained: “Both of us often create new recipes together. For this dish, we omitted coconut to make it healthier, and added other ingredients like lemon grass and curry powder.”

Mr Desmond Chin, Chairman of Nation Employment Pte Ltd and one of the judges on the panel, put it most aptly when describing this winning dish: “I like the sambal very much because of the thoughtful details that went into it. It may be a simple dish but it is the result of Ms Prihatini and Madam Hamid working closely together. When the employer and domestic helper are able to bond and share a good relationship, they can create the recipe for success – keeping everyone in the household happy!”

The other judges were Mr Yeoh Wee Teck, Correspondent, The New Paper and Ms Kho Swee Har, Correspondent, Chinese Newspapers Division.

This competition was a joint promotion between CATS Classified and Nation Employment Pte Ltd. It aims to showcase the invaluable contributions of domestic helpers living and working in Singapore, give everyone a taste of what domestic helpers are capable of, and provide them with a platform to shine.

Three pairs of nominees and nominators won the $300 cash and an iPad mini (32GB) worth $578, respectively; and another three pairs of nominees and nominators bagged a consolation prize of a $200 hamper.
