Winners of CATS Classified Valentine's Day Lovelines announced

Singapore, 14 February 2013 – For more than a month, readers were invited to send their dedications to their other half to be published in print – for free – in CATS Classified’s Valentine’s Day Lovelines.

The campaign garnered an overwhelming response from readers. A staggering amount of 261 dedications were sent via the CATS website and by post.

All entries that had a ‘funny’ element were automatically entered for the “My Funny Valentine” contest, this year’s Lovelines theme. The theme, which was chosen because it touches on the importance of humour in a relationship, hoped to inspire readers to share what they find most amusing and lovable about their partner, as well as their funny love story – in no more than 50 words.

The top two submissions selected from the entries for The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao that best illustrated the theme won a romantic couple’s package each to W Singapore at Sentosa Cove. The package includes a night’s stay at the hotel’s Marvellous Suite, an indulgent experience at Away spa, and a delightful meal at Skirt, W Singapore’s grill restaurant.

The Straits Times’ winners were delivery driver Mohd Zahid Bin Hassan, 36, and administrative assistant Siti Salena Samat, 35. The couple has been married for eight years.

Their entry was about how Zahid had accidentally sent a text message that said “Size 2x melah" by mistake to Siti on their first date – that meant she was twice as big as he was. This led to much amusement on her side, and an embarrassment on his end. However, the couple continued dating and eventually got married after two-and-a-half years of courtship.

Although their first date revolved around size, their love and friendship for each other has made it inconsequential.

Said Zahid: “We met on a website. We started texting each other, and talked for two months before deciding to meet up. When I first saw her, I had a “whoa” kind of feeling, and then I sent the message.” It turned out that he was 85kg then, and Siti was almost twice his size. He added with a laugh: “Of course, now I am bigger than her!”

The bubbly and jovial Siti chipped in: “When I read the message, I wasn’t angry. I was smiling!” She said of their relationship: “When we first met, we had an interesting way of interacting with each other. It’s not lovey dovey – we’re more like friends who joke with each other. Even now, we are still like that.”

She added that it was her idea to send in an entry to the contest, and that her husband didn’t know until one week later.

The winners for Lianhe Zaobao were executive Tang Lizhen, 39, and trainer Ang Wee Leng, 48. Elated with her prize, Lizhen shared that it was a friend who told her about the contest, which she found interesting. She remembered a funny anecdote that had happened years back when they were on holiday and decided to send in an entry.

Married for six years, the two were pleasantly surprised by their win. The two winning entries were published today (14 Feb) along with other selected entries.
