The Straits Times Digital Life Forum and Digital Life Awards 2013

SINGAPORE, 15 February 2013 - More than 300,000 votes have been cast and the winners ofthe biggest, brightest and best gadgets and video games launched last year will be unveiled on February 19, 2013, as decided by readers of Digital Life.

The results will be presented at the second Digital Life Awards, organised and presented by Digital Life, the weekly tech pull-out which comes out on Wednesdays with The Straits Times, Singapore Press Holdings' flagship English newspaper.

More than 100 gadget and game titles across six product categories – smartphones, tablets, laptops, cameras, audio and games - are covered in the contest, which started last year.

The Awards also welcome two partners this year. Courts, Singapore's leading electronics and lifestyle destination, is the presenter for the Awards, while STClassifieds.sg, Singapore's leading and preferred online sales platform, will present this year's Most Innovative award.

This year's event will also see another first -- a forum showcasing several local entrepreneurs, who will give their take on "Thriving Technopreneurship: Can Singapore Make It Happen?" After the forum, there will also be a panel discussion and dialogue with the audience.

The speakers and panellists include Dr Tan Geok Leng, executive director of the Institute for Infocomm Research, A*STAR; Mr Karl Chong, Groupon Singapore's co-founder; Mr Leslie Loh, managing director of tech incubator Red Dot Ventures; and Mr Ryan Lee, founder of home-grown company XMI of X-mini speaker fame. They will join Digital Life editor Oo Gin Lee and deputy editor Sherwin Loh on the forum, which will be moderated by The Straits Times news editor Ignatius Low.

In all, there are 24 sub-categories in this year's Digital Life Awards. Each sub-category features five products, selected by the DL editorial team, that will vie for two awards. The Editor's Choice is chosen by the DL editorial team, while the Readers' Choice is determined by The Straits Times readers in a month-long online public vote. See Appendix 1 for the list of nominees.

This year, there are several new categories to highlight the changing face of technology and the products that consumers are interested in. With the roll-out of Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, a new, Best LTE Smartphone category is introduced. For tablets, the rise of smaller, more compact tablets will debut in the Best Tablet (Under 9-inch) category.

For cameras, there are two categories for the Best DSLR in view of the proliferation of new camera types – those that use Full-Frame sensors and those that use APS-C. Another newcomer is the Best Hybrid Laptop category, to recognise the new form factor of the latest devices running Windows 8.

Given the rise in the sales and use of headphones and in-ear earphones, the Best Audio category has also been added, encompassing the Best Headphones and Best Earphones category.

As part of ongoing reader engagement by The Straits Times and Digital Life, 100 readers will be invited to attend the forum and awards presentation ceremony.

Your reporter and photographer/camera crew are cordially invited to attend the DL Forum and DL Awards 2013 presentation ceremony.
