Men's Health Urbanathlon welcomes female participants for the very first time

Singapore, 27 February 2013 — On 3 March (Sunday), 3,000 eager runners will take on the Men's Health Urbanathlon, Singapore’s most gruelling urban obstacle race. Men's Health Urbanathlon 2013 features nine obstacles along a 14km course that runs through the heart of the island’s central business district, but will be bigger, better, and tougher than its previous iterations. All available slots for this year's race were taken up within two months. 

Some of the new and revamped obstacles along the 14km route include Monkey Business, which will require Urbanathletes to tackle an inclined monkey bar, and Workload, where participants will run 100m with a 20kg, water-weighted sandbag. (See Fact Sheet for full descriptions of obstacles).

But undoubtedly the highlight of this year’s race will be the participation of 300 female runners, who, shoulder-to-shoulder, will run alongside the men to vie for the top prizes worth over $7,000 in the individual category, and over $14,000 in the corporate category. Each competitor also received a race pack valued at over $400.

Running for a cause

Several local celebrities will also be taking part in the Urbanathlon, and the inclusion of female racers has provided an opportunity for Fox Sports presenters Kelly Latimer and Colette Wong, to run for a cause close to their hearts – the Alzheimer’s Disease Association – as well as to raise awareness about dementia. 

While all the attention will certainly be on the female participants this year, there will also be several male celebrities looking to improve on their previous performances, including Oli Pettigrew, Alex Yoong, Paul Foster, and Manhunt Singapore 2012 winner Jason Chee.

Elite athletes such as Anne Qi Hui, Sumiko Tan, and parathlete Mohd Shariff Abdullah, Singapore’s very own “Blade Runner”, will also be taking on the 14km route and 9 obstacles at the Urbanathlon.

The excitement will continue after the race at the Finish Point, where participants can collect their finishers’ T-shirt and medal, cool down and get hosed off at MINI Manual “Car Wash” area by MINI babes. While they witness the prize presentation, racers can also help themselves to complimentary beer and food, recover with sports massage and have fun with the games in the race village. There are attractive prizes to be won too.

The Singapore Men’s Health Urbanathlon is jointly organised by SPH Magazines and HiVelocity, and presented by MINI. Adidas is official apparel of the race, and the main sponsors include Aquarius, Brand’s, Clear, Lab Series, Maxinutrition, Nautica, Polar, Sony and True Fitness with Singapore Sports Council as the venue sponsor.
