7,000 At CATS Classified Pets Corner Event 2013

Singapore, 10 March 2013 - More than 100 pet owners gathered together for a mass pledging ceremony at the CATS Classified Pets Corner Event 2013, which was held at East Coast Park today. During the "Love Pledge to My Pet" mass ceremony, pet owners went on stage with their pets and recited in unison a pledge of love and commitment to their beloved animal companions. This was the first time such a ceremony was organised in Singapore.

Ms Tan Su-Lin, Vice-President of CATS Classified, explained the objective of this groundbreaking exercise: “Statistics from the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have shown an increase in the number of animal welfare and abuse cases in the past five years. This event provides us with the perfect opportunity to play our part in reinforcing the importance of responsible pet ownership and spreading the message that caring for a pet is a lifelong commitment.”

There were also pets vying for awards in various contests, which included:

  • Royal Canin’s ‘What’s your height?’ Contest
  • Dog-walk Contest
  • My Pet Rocks!
  • Royal Canin‘s “Most Gorgeous Fur” Contest
  • Fastest Hamster Race

The winner of Royal Canin’s “Most Gorgeous Fur” contest was two-year-old Elvis. His owner, Mr Ng Rong Hwa, 23, explained how he keeps the beautiful, silky coat of his cat in top form: “We comb Elvis’ fur everyday. We also bathe him once a week. He is a Maine Coone and unlike most felines, cats of this breed actually love water.”

The award for the “tallest” pooch was bagged by a Border Collie, measuring 135cm in height; while a Chihuahua, measuring 19cm in height, took the honours for the "smallest" pooch.

Pets Corner is an annual event that brings pet owners together with pet product retailers, pet service providers, as well as animal welfare authorities and organisations offering a wide variety of products, services and useful information. This year's event, with the theme "Fun Time by the Beach", drew a crowd of 7,000 that enjoyed a fun-filled day with their animal friends.
