For the first time ever, the Asia Boating Awards was held in Sanya, on the eve of the Hainan Rendezvous, marking the unprecedented growth of the luxury yachting in China.
China, 16 April, 2013 – The ninth annual Asia Boating Awards, organised by Asia-Pacific Boating and China Boating, was held this year at the Intercontinental Hotel Serenity Coast Resort honoring the best of the yachting industry in Asia and abroad. The gala event was held on the eve of the fourth edition of the Hainan Rendezvous, Sanya's premiere yachting and luxury life style event.
In addition to the many industry leaders in attendance at the black tie gala dinner, numerous celebrities attended the event including Hu Bing.
The event also serves as an annual reunion for kingpins of the growing Chinese yacht owner community; this year led by Wu Yi, Feng Hui, Ge Weidong, Chen Weijing, and many more yacht owners from throughout China. Official attendance included Monaco's Ambassador to China, Her Excellency Catherine Fautrier.
“The Asia Boating Awards are unique in that they bring together international and Asian yacht builders, as well as industry insiders and high net worth individuals from around the region in one gala ceremony, at one time. No other event in the world does this in the way we do,” said Ryan Swift, Editor-in-Chief of Asia-Pacific Boating magazine.
Wang Xinlei, Editor-in-Chief of China Boating, said: “I’m very pleased to see so many good friends here at the Awards. The tremendous support from boat owners and international yachting industry leaders reaffirms China Boating and Asia-Pacific Boating as the premiere luxury yachting magazines in Asia.”
Horizon Yachts and Kingship were again acknowledged as Asia’s top yacht builders by the panel of judges, while the honour of Best Asian Built Yacht, much sought-after by Asian yards, went to Gulf Craft’s Majesty 135, a first for the UAE builder.
This year’s awards for Best Custom Built Yacht and Best Semi Custom Built Yacht went to Lürssen for Quatroelle and to Benetti for the Classic Supreme 132 Petrus II respectively. Both yards have been very busy with superyacht launches in the past year, with Lürssen’s stream of 80+ metre superyachts getting plenty of attention. Currently, the German-based builder is working on the world’s largest superyacht, the 184-metre Project Azzam.
Asian buyers have snapped up large production yachts in recent years, with plenty of 100-foot fiberglass superyachts being sold in the region, hence there was a strong industry interest in the category of Best Production Motor Yacht (24m to 40m). Princess Yachts of the UK walked off with this prize on the strength of their very-well regarded Princess 40M Imperial Princess, the flagship of their range.
Ferretti Yachts of Italy will surely be pleased with their victory in the very tough category of Best Production Motor Yacht (15m to 24m), on the strength of their newly released F690.
Azimut Yachts, possibly the world’s biggest production yacht builder, has been revamping its range, and in recent years has developed a long-range cruising option in the new Magellano series. The panel of judges for the year’s awards duly took note of, giving the nod to the Magellano 43 as Best Production Motor Yacht (up to 15m).
In sailing, the Beneteau Group was well rewarded this year, with the Jeanneau 509 capturing Best Production Sailing Yacht (15m to 30m) while the Beneteau Sense 46 claimed the honours in Best Production Sailing Yacht (up to 15m).
In the field of yacht design, the judges were notably impressed with the Marquis 630, the latest model from the US builder that has famously employed the superyacht design stars Nuvolari Lenard to great effect. In Asia, Ker Yacht Design, which has been working closely with the Zhuhai production team of McConaghy Boats and helping to produce a range of one-design speed machines, got the nod for Best Yacht Designer in Asia of the Year. This award recognises the work of the many international designers who are now bringing their talents to the growing field of Asian yacht builders.
Finally, Asia yacht industry veteran Mike Simpson, who founded the firm that bears his name, was recognised by the judges as Personality of the Year, for his many years of effort in growing the yachting market in Asia.
