Lianhe Wanbao's 30th anniversary mobile app wins excellence award at the 2013 Asian Publishing Awards

Singapore, 12 July 2013 – Lianhe Wanbao’s iOS app, “Wanbao - 30 Years of Dedication Mobile App” (晚报真情30). received an Excellence Award in the "Best Multimedia Integration to Engage Audience" category at the Asian Publishing Awards 2013. The awards were given out at the Gala Dinner ceremony of the Asian Publishing Convention at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Manila, Philippines tonight. This was the first regional award that Lianhe Wanbao had picked up for a digital project. 

The Asian Publishing Awards (APA) is Asia’s premier awards program that recognises outstanding achievement in the development of successful business models using the tools and multimedia channels available. These apply to book, newspaper, newsletter and magazine publishers in the multimedia (print, mobile and online).

The Chinese language app, “晚报真情30”, (Wanbao - 30 Years of Dedication) was launched in April 2013 with the collaborative efforts of Chinese print newspaper, Lianhe Wanbao and bilingual (English and Chinese) news portal, The app was launched in conjunction with Lianhe Wanbao’s 30th anniversary and signifies a push for the evening daily in embracing multimedia news presentation. The app features repackaged and optimised content from a special 30th anniversary print supplement of the same title. The supplement was distributed with copies of Lianhe Wanbao, with enthusiastic responses from both old and new readers alike.

Content highlights for the app include the recap of breaking news events in Singapore over the past 30 years and in-depth interviews with past and present editors, as well as journalists. Users will also be able to view videos and picture gallery from the news.

This is the second digital project jointly developed and launched by Lianhe Wanbao and bilingual news and entertainment portal, The first project, an e-book on Apple iBooks (, was launched to commemorate singing legend Fong Fei Fei in 2012, following news of her sudden death. The e-book was well received by both local and overseas audiences, garnering over 20,000 downloads within a month of its launch. 

In line with the newspaper’s strong history of close collaboration with local commerce, the app was produced with the kind support of four eminent local companies - Novena Foundation Pte Ltd, Moneymax Group Pte Ltd, Merdeka Audio Private Limited and Teo Heng Trading Pte Ltd. The app was free during the launch and could be downloaded for free till 31 May 2013. From 1 June 2013 onwards, it costs USD2.99 per download.
