The scholarships given out this year were as follows: six SPH Journalism scholarships, 12 scholarships to children of SPH staff and newspaper vendors, and ten SPH Foundation Lim Kim San Memorial scholarships.
Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman for SPH and SPH Foundation, was the event’s Guest-of-Honour. He presented the SPH Journalism and SPH Foundation Lim Kim San Memorial scholarships. Mr Alan Chan, Chief Executive Officer of SPH and Director of SPH Foundation, gave out the scholarships to the children of SPH staff and newspaper vendors.
In his address, Dr Lee said: “Like all media companies world-wide, SPH faces challenges. The rapid growth and pervasiveness of digital and social media is encroaching on our traditional newspaper publishing operation. Changing media consumption habits especially among younger people have added to our competition. To counter these challenges, we are transforming SPH to better serve our consumers both in print and online. We have also extended our reach with a wide range of mobile products.”

One of the recipients for the SPH Journalism Scholarship 2013 was Ms Jan Lee Puay Yee. She will be pursuing International Liberal Studies at the Waseda University in Japan.
She said : “Since young, I have enjoyed learning the Japanese language and culture. To be given the opportunity to pursue a liberal arts course in Japan is a dream come true. My internship at the Straits Times Life! Desk was also a fulfilling experience as it allowed me to further my interest in the arts, drama and theatre. I look forward to playing my part and covering the local Singapore arts scene’s many exciting developments.”
SPH Foundation Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships
The SPH Foundation Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships are awarded to deserving students from low-income families to fund their studies at local universities. Since 2006, there had been 43 recipients of the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships. To mark the SPH Foundation’s 10th anniversary this year, the bond-free scholarships, which were originally awarded to full time language students, were extended to local undergraduates reading humanities.
Ms Chua Shi Min, one of this year’s Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship recipients, is pursuing Chinese Studies at the Nanyang Technological University.
She said: “As a recipient of the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship, I am grateful that I can pursue my studies without worrying about the school fees. I am confident I will be able to excel in my studies and through this course, bring my passion for writing to greater heights.”
Mr Aloysius Ho, another recipient for the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship, is reading History at the National University of Singapore.
He said: “I am honoured and privileged to be amongst the first batch of humanities students to receive the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship. Growing up under less than ideal circumstances, this scholarship is an affirmation of my hard work and faith. I am grateful to SPH Foundation for giving me this opportunity.”
In recognition of their service and contributions to the company, a total of 12 scholarships were given to the children of SPH staff and news vendors for studies at the local junior colleges, polytechnics and universities.

SPH has a 20 per cent stake in MediaCorp TV Holdings Pte Ltd, which operates free-to-air channels 5, 8 and U, and a 40 per cent stake in MediaCorp Press Limited, which publishes the free newspaper, Today.
Events and Out-of-Home Advertising
SPH’s events arm Sphere Exhibits organises innovative consumer and trade events and exhibitions as well as large scale conferences in Singapore and the region. In addition, SPH has ventured into out-of-home (OOH) advertising through its digital out-of-home platform SPH MediaBoxOffice.
SPH owns and manages Paragon, the prime retail and office complex in the heart of Orchard Road, Singapore's main shopping belt. Its second retail development, The Clementi Mall, started business operations in 2011. SPH's wholly-owned subsidiary, Times Development Pte Ltd, has also developed a 43-storey upmarket residential condominium, Sky@eleven, at Thomson Road.
