Singapore, – Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation), together with the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC), will host the third edition of the SPH Foundation National Para-Swimming Championships on . It will be held at the swimming complex within MOE Physical Sports Education Branch (formerly known as CCAB Swimming Complex).
The Guest-of-Honour for the event is Ms Denise Phua, Member of Parliament for Moulmein-Kallang GRC.
The event, a highlight in the SDSC's annual sporting calendar, is for swimmers aged 7 years and above. Over 100 para-athletes are expected to vie for the championship title. The participants are assigned to different categories and events based on their disabilities, and will participate in all four swim strokes, as well as the freestyle relay. Paralympians Theresa Goh and Yip Pin Xiu have taken part in past editions of the competition.
The competition also serves as a platform for coaches and officials to spot potential candidates to join the National squad and to represent Singapore in prestigious competitions overseas. Swimmers who perform well may be selected for the upcoming ASEAN Para Games in Myanmar, and the 2015 ASEAN Para Games.
Ms Ginney Lim, General Manager of SPH Foundation, said: "This is the third year we are supporting the SPH Foundation National Para-Swimming Championships. We are grateful that the Singapore Disability Sports Council has provided us the opportunity to show our support towards the Foundation's key objectives of promoting sports and doing charity."
Mr Henry Tan, Executive Director of SDSC, said: "There is renewed interest in disability sports, and this augurs well in Singapore. With more participation, there will be more awareness and inclusiveness for persons with disabilities."
