SPH hosts National Age Group Doubles for second consecutive year

SPH hosts National Age Group Doubles for second consecutive year

Singapore, 15 November 2013 - Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH), together with Singapore Badminton Association (SBA), will host the second edition of the SPH National Age Group Doubles 2013 from 18-23 November 2013 at the Singapore Badminton Hall. Admission is free.

The six days of intense competition will see participants compete in the Under-11, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 categories. For the first time, an Open category for both the men’s and women’s doubles will be added due to the growing popularity of the sport. The total prize money for the competition has also surpassed the $10,000 mark for the first time. The finals of the various categories will be held on 23 November.

The Guest-of-Honour for the finals is Mr Yatiman Yusof, SPH Foundation Director.

The National Age Group Doubles was first introduced in 2003 and is now into its tenth year. Held annually during the school holidays, the organisers are hoping to attract more participation amongst the community. More than 300 participants have signed up for this year. Schools and parents are encouraged to bring their students and children to cheer on their peers and also to catch the action. The competition also serves as a platform for coaches to discover and develop the next generation of promising young local shuttlers.

One such talent is Yeo Jia Min, who is currently part of the National Intermediate Squad, a feeder squad for the National Team. Last year, 13 year old Jia Min partnered Elaine Chua in the Girls’ Under-17 Doubles category and emerged as champions. Not resting on her laurels, Jia Min was also the Under-15 Girls Singles Champion in the recently concluded Badminton Asia Youth championships in Kudus, Central Java, Indonesia.

Ms Ginney Lim, General Counsel, Executive Vice President, Corporate Communications & CSR and Group Company Secretary, SPH, said: "Sports promotes social, physical and psychological development. With the Age Group Doubles, skills such as teamwork and sportsmanship are also developed. SPH is pleased to be the title sponsor of a meaningful sport that is gaining popularity in Singapore."

Mr Chew Keet Hou, Team Director of SBA, said: “The National Age Group Doubles has been a major local competition for national and local players to compete in. It is also a platform for our national coaches to identify potential talents for the national intermediate squad. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank SPH for their support to make this annual competition possible.”

The finals of this year’s competition will be on 23 November at 1pm.
