SPH MediaWorks stars all ready to shine

Oct 2, 2000 - The stars have arrived! Five local artistes, namely Kym Ng, Bryan Wong, Darren Lim, Wang Yanqing and Guo Ling join the Chinese Media and Entertainment Unit of SPH MediaWorks Ltd today as full-time artistes.

All five artistes are popular faces in local television, having hosted and appeared in various highly-rated Chinese variety programmes and sitcoms. Three of the artistes including Kym Ng, Bryan Wong and Guo Liang are among the Top Ten Popular Artistes in 1998 and 1999.

According to Mr Man Shu Sum, Chief Operating Officer of Chinese Media & Entertainment, the ex-TCS artistes have decided to make the switch to SPH MediaWorks because they are "looking forward to new challenges and new breakthrough in their careers."

Television viewers will be able to catch the stars in action by mid-2001 when SPH MediaWorks launches its television channels.

Mr Man Shu Sum said:"The artistes will be repackaged and repositioned so viewers will get to see old faces with new image. We will also be producing a new genre of programmes with fresh new treatment."

"It will not make sense to both advertisers and viewers if we were to do the same programmes as TCS. We aim to provide more alternatives and choices for them", added Mr Man.

The newly-joined TV talents will be participating in SPH MediaWorks productions such as sitcoms, drama, game shows, info-tainment and other variety programmes. They will also be given opportunities to work with foreign artistes in co-productions with China, Hongkong and Taiwan.

Besides the five artistes, the Chinese Media and Entertainment Unit is expected to expand further as more artistes including Michelle Chia and Evelyn Tan come on board soon. Apart from familiar faces, SPH MediaWorks has been conducting talent search in Singapore, Malaysia, Hongkong and Taiwan to look for new talents.
