Singapore, 1 September 2016 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) is the first corporate sponsor of the Garden City Fund’s Plant-A-Coral programme, a community outreach initiative of the National Parks Board (NParks).SPH will be sponsoring 10 coral nubbins at the Sisters' Islands Marine Park. The four sponsored coral nubbins species are Gardineroseris planulata, Plesiastrea versipora, Coscinaraea columna and Madracis kirbyii (photos can be accessed from link below). The Garden City Fund is the community outreach programme of NParks and is a registered charity. It aims to provide opportunities for the public to learn about Singapore’s rich marine biodiversity and contribute to marine conservation efforts. Its website is www.gardencityfund.org. Coral nubbins are small coral fragments that are attached to wall plugs where they will grow to suitable sizes in nurseries before being transplanted to the Reef Enhancement Units (REUs). REUs are artificial structures placed within suitable reef zones to enhance bare areas for marine organisms to grow and for reef fish to seek refuge.Singapore’s waters cover less than one percent of the world’s surface area and is home to more than 250 species of hard corals. These make up about one-third of the world’s total and close to half of the region's total of hard coral species. This includes the four abovementioned coral nubbins species that SPH is sponsoring. The REUs are found on Small Sister’s Island, part of the 40-hectare Sisters’ Islands Marine Park which are situated south of mainland Singapore. This SPH donation of 10 coral nubbins is the first from its SPH Green Fund which aims to support worthy conservation and environmental projects by schools, charities and local community groups.
