Her World Woman of the Year 2018

This year, Her World honours Ng Ling Ling, Managing Director of Community Chest from 2013 to June 2018, and industrial designer Olivia Lee as its Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever 2018 respectively.

Singapore, 24 August 2018 - Her World, Singapore's No. 1 women's magazine, published by SPH Magazines Pte Ltd (SPH Magazines), presented the Her World Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever Awards 2018 at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore tonight. Mdm Halimah Yacob, President of the Republic of Singapore, was the event's Guest of Honour.

Singapore's No. 1 magazine Her World (www.HerWorld.com), prides itself on being the voice of the modern, forward-thinking Singapore woman. For over five decades, it has engaged, inspired and empowered readers, helping them to live, play, love and work better and smarter.

Her World has presented the Her World Woman of the Year award and the Her World Young Woman Achiever award annually since 1991 and 1999 respectively, honouring the achievements of women who are inspirational role models to other women.

The Her World Woman of the Year award recognises a woman whose outstanding achievements have brought her to public notice and earned her wide respect. She projects the best of Singapore at home and abroad, and her accomplishments are deemed to leave a lasting impression. She is an inspiration and a role model to other women. Past winners include Professor Chan Heng Chee (1991), Ms Jennie Chua (1999), President Halimah Yacob (2003), Professor Ivy Ng (2011/2012), Madam Zuraidah Abdullah (2015), Dr Sudha Nair (2016) and Ms Angelene Chan (2017).

The Her World Woman of the Year 2018 is Ng Ling Ling, 46, who was Managing Director of Community Chest (Comchest) from 2013 to June 2018. She has spent close to two decades in the social service sector. During her time at the National Council of Social Service, Comchest’s parent organisation, Ling Ling set up the Social Service Training Institute and developed a Fund Allocation Team, a central fund administrator to streamline resources for beneficiaries, handle budgets for charities and accountability to funders.

During her tenure, Comchest raised a record $800 million in donations through the Care and Share Movement. She also played a part in increasing average donations from $40 million to $50 million annually. Ling Ling also helped to build a culture of care and authenticity within Comchest, and changed the way the team canvassed for donations.

"I see the award beyond any personal recognition, but as more of an affirmation to the contribution of social service to the greater community. That my service, to the disadvantaged and people with disabilities through National Council of Social Service and Community Chest in the past 16 years, has been valued, is a testament of a society that recognises the importance of caring for others, inclusion and leaving no one behind," Ling Ling said. "I hope this award will encourage an increasing number of people who are making social service their chosen vocation to continue to press on, persevere and know that their caring efforts do not go unnoticed."

The Her World Young Woman Achiever award recognises a young woman whose achievements have surpassed existing boundaries, inspiring those around her and paving the way for others in the future. She has also demonstrated the potential for attaining a higher level of success in her chosen field.

This year's winner is 33-year-old industrial designer Olivia Lee, one of Singapore's up-and-coming creatives who is making a name for herself overseas. Her name has been showcased in Milan, Berlin, and Tokyo, and she has also been featured in well-known international design journals.

Last year, Olivia was named one of eight promising designers from around the world at the well-known furniture fair Salone Del Mobile Milano, an exhibition platform in Italy known for kick-starting the careers of many young designers. Her work - named The Athena Collection - wowed design critics, received effusive review, and made numerous Best-Of lists. The 10-piece smart home system consisted of furniture and home accessories aimed at solving technological lifestyle problems in a modern era.

"Ever since I was little, I yearned to translate my curiosity and diverse interests into a meaningful career. Receiving this award is incredibly validating and will spur me to continue doing good work," Olivia said. "I hope my story inspires other little girls and aspiring creatives everywhere to make their own game and play by their own rules. Hold on to your passions, as obscure and unconventional as they are. Use it to bring value to others. Boldly invent the job you want to do and live by your own definitions of success."

Mr Loh Yew Seng, CEO of SPH Magazines, said: "Her World has always led the pack when it comes to forging ahead and breaking new ground. We were one of the first local magazines to launch an award for inspiring women, paying tribute to the successful women of the day and celebrating their accomplishments. The Her World Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever Awards remains a signature annual event, and we hope it will inspire the next generation of leaders and achievers."

The Her World Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever Awards 2018 was presented by Bvlgari and Decorte.
